Apply For Accommodation

Accommodation Application Form

There are a range of accommodation types on offer here at BU made up of halls of residence, our student village and uni lets. More information about the types of accommodation available can be seen on our undergraduate accommodation page and our postgraduate accommodation page. Information about who can, when and how to apply can be seen below.

Who can apply for accommodation?

All first year undergraduate students can apply for accommodation as can all postgraduate students. Students transferring from other institutions directly into the second and third year are also eligible to apply.
Students whose home address is within 15 miles of the University are not eligible to apply for Halls of Residence; you may however apply for Unilet accommodation.
Current students who are returning for second and third years are encouraged to use the BU Letting Service which offers a wide variety of privately let accommodation in the popular areas of Winton, Boscombe, Charminster and Wallisdown.

When can I apply for accommodation?

You can apply for accommodation once you are holding an unconditional offer. For undergraduate students, this means you can only apply once you have met the conditions of your offer and your offer has gone unconditional on UCAS Track.
If you apply whilst holding a conditional offer your application will not be processed and you will have to reapply once your offer is made unconditional.

How do I apply for accommodation?

You can apply for your accommodation online using the BU Accommodation Application Form - which can be found at the bottom of the page.
If you are applying for Halls of Residence you will be asked to choose a first and insurance option, if appropriate.
If you have any additional needs or special circumstances we need to be aware of please include details in the 'About Yourself' section so we can allocate the most suitable accommodation for you.

When will I receive my accommodation offer?

The majority of our accommodation is not allocated until August, therefore please do not worry if you have not heard back straight away after applying. You accommodation offer will be sent to you via email and once sent you will have a limited time to accept and pay your deposit.
Please be aware that some of our accommodation, whilst allocated by us, is actually managed by private companies: UNITE Plc and Signpost Homes. They will send through an additional offer and information after you have received your allocation and offer from us. Please do not worry if this takes a couple of weeks to come through; if you have received your offer from us your room will be reserved for you.

What next?

Once you have accepted your accommodation offer and paid the deposit to secure it you will be given a move in date. Now all you need to do is get ready.
Students will be responsible for providing all bedding, towels and tea towels, kitchen utensils, cutlery and cooking equipment (such as pots and pans) as well as personal items. If your accommodation has a shared kitchen you may wish to wait until you arrive to buy some cooking items to avoid duplicates and also spread the costs between you and your new house/flat mates.
You may also wish to join the BU Facebook Page(www.facebook.com/JoinBournemouthUni) where you can find out more about what's going on and meet other future and current students.

New Undergraduates

New Undergraduates
Living away from home for the first time can be a daunting experience, especially when you need to find new accommodation.
At Bournemouth University we expect to offer all our first year students a place to live.
The Accommodation Service, based in Talbot House at the Talbot Campus, is responsible for allocating first year students their accommodation, as well as providing a range of other services.
This includes maintaining a register of private lets and advising on accommodation queries and problems.
We also can help you find a place in a wide variety of undergraduate accommodation, including both University owned and private residences.
All our accommodation is within a few miles of the Talbot and Lansdowne campuses and social life.
For most programmes, the start of term is 1 October, however you can arrive from 21 September if you are staying in University managed accommodation.
______________________________
For more information on the various types of residence that we offer all our new undergraduates, use the list below.

Family Accommodation

We have a small supply of housing available for couples and families on a first come, first served basis, and these may be available for longer lets (both for full calendar years and potentially 2-3 years). There is also the Bournemouth University Letting Service which is an introductory agency for private sector housing.

Student Village

In the student village there are two compact Bungalows ideal for small families comprising 2 bedrooms, a lounge with kitchen adjacent, and a bathroom. Although there are no private gardens, there are green spaces nearby. Being on Talbot Campus, the Nursery facility is only 50 metres away. The accommodation is furnished. Rents will fall within Local Housing Allowance levels for 2 bedroom accommodation for those student parents wishing to claim Housing Benefit/LHA. Please note that these units do not become available every year because occupants can stay for the entire length of their course if they wish.
Deposit: £380 per adult resident which includes £80 non-refundable administration and personal possessions insurance premium.
Rent: £785.23 per calendar month including utilities (electric, gas, water, sewage, broadband, incoming telephone call facility)
To enquire about these bungalows please email: accommodation@bournemouth.ac.uk or telephone on 01202 961679.

Conel Court

Built by a private developer and leased to the university for an initial three year period, starting in September 2010. It comprises a small block of 11 flats within a very short walk of the Talbot Campus with its Nursery facilities, and includes 8 one bedroom flats which are ideal for couples or families with very young children, 2 two bedroom flats and 1 three bedroom flat for families with more than one child or where one child is older than a toddler. These flats are let furnished and so include all white goods in the kitchen, and all necessary furniture in the bedrooms and lounges to live without any additions (aside from a television). There is very limited car parking for the block (available for a fee and pre-booked on a first come, first served basis) because of the very close proximity of Talbot Campus and ease of access to Winton shops closeby and the University and public bus services almost on the doorstep.
Conel Court flats will be let on an Assured Shorthold Tenancy for a minimum term of 50 weeks.
Deposit: £380 per adult resident which includes £80 non-refundable administration and personal possessions insurance premium.
Rent:
  • 1 Bedroom: £585 per calendar month plus utilities
  • 2 Bedroom: £700 per calendar month plus utilities
  • 3 Bedroom: £895 per calendar month plus utilities
To enquire about and apply for flats at Conel Court, please e-mail: lettingservice@bournemouth.ac.uk or telephone on 01202 961679

Bournemouth University Letting Service

BU has its own in-house Agency service to assist students with finding a home in the private sector. Whilst most houses available are tailored for groups sharing a house or flat, there will some properties and Landlords which would suit couples and families too. These houses and flats have been inspected by University staff and the Landlords sign up to a Code of Practice for student lettings.
Rent (approximate prices):
  • Studio Apartment: £300-£450 per calendar month plus utilities
  • 1 Bed Flat: £450-£600 per calendar month plus utilities
  • 2 Bed Flat/House: £600-£750 per calendar month plus utilities
  • 3 Bed Flat/House: £750-£1100 per calendar month plus utilities
  • 4 Bed Flat/House: £1200-£1400 per calendar month plus utilities
For more information contact the Letting Service by e-mail: lettingservice@bournemouth.ac.uk or telephone on 01202 961678. To view currently available properties please use the StudentPad(www.bournemouthstudentpad.co.uk/).

Council Tax

All housing occupied solely by full time students will be exempt from Council Tax payments. One non full time student in residence will create a liability of 75% of the normal Council Tax for the house or flat, and more than one non full time student will create a full liability. Please enquire directly with the Local Authority Council Tax department for more information.

Utilities

Utilities costs will vary according to the type of heating. Allow £50-£100 per calendar month depending upon the size of property for gas and electric, and £20-40 per calendar month for water and sewage costs. Allow Broadband internet costs of around £15-30 per calendar month (depending upon speed of connection and download limits).

Allocation Policy

8 X 1 bed flats - available to 1st year and postgraduate couples, and BU staff members (single or couple) only until 1 April. Where applicants are a couple, and both are BU students, then both must be 1st year or PG. If one is not a student, that is acceptable. After 1 April, applications are taken on a 1st come first served basis by payment of deposit. Applications from those with Conditional places only ARE permitted, however applicants must be aware that they will pay a full deposit, which is not refundable if they do not gain their grades or ultimately are unable to come to Bournemouth University for any reason and even if applicants are housed in other BU accommodation, they will need to find another deposit.
2 X 2 bed flats and 1 X 3 bed flat - available to families with children only until 1 August. Applicants can be Conditional, however the non-refundable deposit rules apply as per the 1 bed flats, and preference will be given to Unconditional applicants where there is a choice of candidates. Staff with children are considered after 1 August, as will couples (who are happy to pay the higher rent) and two/three Postgraduates or Final Year students (with a good reference) sharing.
Any unlet units by the date of the Homefinder days (in early September) will be made available to any students or staff.

Returning Students

Students returning from their first years are not eligible for halls-type accommodation or Unilet (University managed) house shares.
Instead, the most popular form of accommodation for second, third and fourth years students is privately rented flats and houses.

Private Letting and the BU Letting Service

Bournemouth offers a wide variety of privately let accommodation in the popular areas of Winton, Boscombe, Charminster and Wallisdown.
The Accommodation Service runs a “tenant find” service for local landlords and so Returning Students should always contact us first when house hunting.
Properties can also be viewed at www.bournemouthstudentpad.co.uk
