Radboud University Nijmegen is a public university with a strong focus on research in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Established in 1923 and situated in the oldest city of the Netherlands, it has seven faculties and enrolls over 19,130 students. Radboud was internationally ranked by QS World University Rankings, and placed at 138th.Radboud University Nijmegen is situated in the oldest city in the Netherlands. It has seven faculties and enrols over 17,500 students. Our personal style of teaching ensures that there is plenty of opportunity to work closely with instructors and fellow students in small seminars. One of the main strengths of our research is the way we forge cooperative links across disciplinary boundaries and the continuous exchange of ideas with others working in related areas. The mutual exchange between the city and the University can be heard in the intellectual debates which, in a university city such as Nijmegen, are particularly lively.

History

The first Nijmegen University was founded in 1655 and terminated around 1680. The Radboud University Nijmegen was established in 1923 as the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen, or Catholic University of Nijmegen, and started out with 27 professors and 189 students. The university was founded because the Roman Catholic community wanted its own university. At the time, Roman Catholics in the Netherlands were disadvantaged and occupied almost no higher posts in government. After fierce competition with the cities of Den Bosch, Tilburg, The Hague and Maastricht, Nijmegen was chosen as the city to house the university. The subsequent Second World War hit the university hard. Many prominent members were lost, among them professors Robert Regout and Titus Brandsma. They were deported to Dachau concentration camp. In 1943, rector Hermesdorf refused to cooperate with the Germans. On February 22, 1944, the university lost many buildings in a bombardment. Classes resumed in March 1945. Since then, student numbers rose steadily from 3,000 in 1960 to 15,000 in 1980.In 2004, the university changed its name to Radboud University Nijmegen, after Saint Radboud, a bishop who lived around 900.

Campus

The university's medical department is linked to the St Radboud University Medical Center, a large teaching hospital located on the Heyendaal campus along with the other university buildings. Recent building projects included new on-campus residence halls, a sports center and several science buildings. The university campus is located next to Heyendaal train station. Frequent shuttle buses connect the university to Nijmegen Central Station and the city centre.Radboud University is noted for its green campus, often listed among the most attractive in the Netherlands.

Research

Radboud University Nijmegen is home to several research institutions, including NanoLab Nijmegen, Donders Centre for Cognition and the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging. Faculty members Anne Cutler (1999), Henk Barendregt (2002), Peter Hagoort (2005), and Theo Rasing (2008) won the Spinozapremie. Visiting professor Sir Andre Geim and former student Sir Konstantin Novoselov were awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics. The QS World University Rankings ranked the university 138th in the world in 2011.

Research in Nijmegen

ResearchResearch covers a wide range of disciplines. We are not only strong in the field of life sciences, but also in law, language, and literature. Our high-quality research institutes, which rank at the forefront of a number of fields, offer unique opportunities to undergraduates, postgraduates and PhD students alike.
Research institutes
Radboud University has grouped its research within research institutes with the aim of creating an optimal research environment which has good focus and a critical mass. One of our distinguishing hallmarks is our emphasis on interdisciplinarity. The current size of the University and its academic breadth provide the conditions for interdisciplinary co-operation.
ResearchFor example, at the Nijmegen Centre of Molecular Life Sciences, biomedical experts, medical scientists, biologists, physicists, and bio-informaticians work together. Research in the cognitive and neurosciences is conducted at the Centre for Language Studies, the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour and at the world-famous Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics.
International
In almost all subject areas, innovative research that extends the frontiers of science is conducted in an international environment. Radboud University's research results are consistent with and make an essential contribution to the global body of knowledge. Academic research expands the boundaries of knowledge and learning. These are key in analysing and finding solutions to societal issues which in turn often provide a source of inspiration for academic research.

Research Institutes

Where scientists come together from different backgrounds, new insights emerge. One of the main strengths of research at our university is the way we forge cooperative links across national and disciplinary boundaries. We value the breadth of the research carried out here.
Our top people are not buried away in their research groups – they derive their strength from a continuous exchange of ideas and results with others working in related areas. We have several major research institutes, each offering outstanding potential to students and researchers alike.

Research assessments

The Radboud University has several major research institutes which are evaluated once every six years by an international peer review committee. The institute assessment puts emphasis on strategy and organisational aspects, whereas the research programme assessments focus on the results and quality of the scientific research and on the future. Together the criteria represent a comprehensive picture of the performance of the Radboud University’s research institutes and of its future potential. The research assessments are carried out according to the Standard Evaluation Protocol for Public Research Organizations as defined by the Associations of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).  Published Research Assessments with year of publication:

      Nobel Prize in Physics 2010

Professor Andre Geim and Professor Konstantin Novoselov , who are both connected to the Radboud University Nijmegen, have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics 2010. Geim and Novoselov have won the prize for their research into the properties of graphene, the thinnest material in the world. This page provides an overview with the news about this Nobel Prize.

      The discovery of grapheme

Geim and Novoselov discovered graphene, the thinnest material in the world and the flattest form of carbon (one atom thick). They explored the possibilities offered by this promising material together with the Nijmegen theoretical physicist Mikhail Katsnelson. Graphene is two hundred times more resistant to breakage than steel and is also the strongest material currently known to man. It is an excellent material for producing very thin, efficient electronic components.Geim has succeeded in producing a working transistor using graphene, with the huge advantage that it continues to work properly at the nanoscale. Other publications show how graphene can be used as a semiconductor or to store hydrogen.

      The Nobel Prize Winners
Andre Geim was born in Sochi in Russia in 1958. He studied Physics in Moscow and in 1987 obtained his PhD from the Institute for Solid State Physics in Chernogolovka (Russia). Geim is professor of Physics at the University of Manchester and professor by special appointment of Innovative Materials and Nanoscience at Radboud University Nijmegen. Professor Konstantin Novoselov completed his PhD at Radboud University, under the supervision of Nijmegen Professor Jan-Kees Maan.

      University Sports Centre

‘Mens sana in corpore sano’: the really good clichés are the ones that are true. Your registration as a Nijmegen student allows you to ‘work out’, individually or with a group. There are classes and workouts for virtually any sport you can think of, and of course you can join one of the many students’ sports clubs, which makes it possible to play in tournaments and (sometimes official) league competition.
New programmes start several times a year. We will not elaborate on all the sports you can practice at the University Sports Centre, but the centre offers both well-known and less well-known sporting activities, including tennis, squash, fitness, volleyball, and of course typically Dutch sports such as ice skating and korfball. If you want to play sports at the University Sports Centre, you need to have a valid sports card. For the academic year 2012/2013, a sports card will cost 94 euros per year for students from Radboud University Nijmegen and other Dutch universities. You can also buy a sports card for 14 euros per month with a minimum of two months.
Note: before you can use the fitness room you are required to attend an introductory class to learn how to use the equipment.

       Coat of arms

The coat of arms was designed at the time of the founding of the university by the goldsmith workshop of the Brom family in Utrecht. The lower part is the coat of arms of the Catholic Church in the Netherlands. The dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit. The shield is surmounted by the crown of Charlemagne. Underneath is the motto "In Dei Nomine Feliciter."
