Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University is a government financed public university of Bangladesh. It is located at Nama para Battala, 1.5 kilometers from Trishal Upazila, some 22 kilometers from Mymensingh district and 100 kilometers from Dhaka.
Information
This is the first and only public university established in memory of great national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam of Bangladesh . It is in a place popularly known as Battala (shade of banyan tree) at Trishal Upazilla headquarters in the district of Mymensingh. The name Battala derives from the legendary banyan tree under which the poet passed his childhood playing flute and developing a poetic mind amidst the benign nature during his one-year stay at Trishal. The campus of the university still holds that the beauty of nature affects of inculcating among its dwellers imaginative-innovative mindsets.
The university was established by the government of Bangladesh on 1 March 2005, though the initiative was taken some years before firstly by a non-official group of socio-cultural local elites: Greater Mymensingh Cultural Forum. The university was originally conceived to be the first culture-based university in Bangladesh , but the University Act of 2006 made it a general university with a special focus on liberal arts education and activities. The academic programme of the university started effective from 3 June 2007 with four departments under two faculties: the three departments of Bengali Language & Literature, English Language & Literature, and Music under the Faculty of Arts and the single Department of Computer Science and Engineering under the Faculty of Science & Engineering. Two more departments were established the next year under two new faculties: the Department of Accounting and Information Systems under the Faculty of Business Administration and the Department of Economics under the Faculty of Social Science.
Two other departments were opened in the academic year 2009-2010 under two faculties: the Department of Finance and Banking under the Faculty of Business Administration and the Department of Fine Arts under the Faculty of Arts. The university possesses a duly-qualified and productive band of youthful faculty members and officers/staffs who are deeply committed to the university’s mission to produce world-class graduates in academic disciplines of social science, humanities, science and business administration whose services and dedications are urgently needed for the reconstruction of Bangladesh.
Mission
The university has just started, still miles to go to attain its vision and mission. It is therefore most important that everyone should work together to transform this university into a ‘Centre of Academic Excellence’ for promotion and enrichment of this country’s cultural heritage and human values for which the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam relentlessly fought through his writings and songs.
History
A project to establish the university was taken at a meeting of the Executive Committee of National Economic Commission (ECNEC) in February 2004. Former prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, laid the foundation stone of the university on March 1, 2005. At a function organised for the birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia inaugurated the functions of the two faculties On 25 May 2007 .Its first batch class was started on 3 June 2007. Professor Dr. Mohammad Shamsur Rahman was the first vice-Chancellor of JKKNIU. The first batch consisted of 185 students in Bangla language and Literature department and English language and Literature department under arts faculty and Computer Science and Engineering department under science faculty. On 23 June 2009, a bill was placed in the parliament to assign the president as chancellor replacing the prime minister.
