History

Tilburg University was founded in 1927, as the Roomsch Katholieke Handelshoogeschool (Roman Catholic University of Commerce), being located in the southern, Catholic part of The Netherlands, visible in its second change of name in 1938: Katholieke Economische Hogeschool (Catholic Economic University). In 1963 the university was once again renamed, as Katholieke Hogeschool Tilburg (Catholic University Tilburg). Today, bearing the name Tilburg University, it has lost its Catholic roots only superficially for it is still regarded, as the Radboud University Nijmegen, as a Catholic university.

1969 Protests

Conflict hogeschool.ogv

On April 28, 1969, students barricaded the campus buildings, demanding educational and organizational changes. Months before students had unofficially renamed the university Karl Marx University, painting this title across campus to accentuate the importance of Marxist ideas in the then primarily economics-oriented curriculum. These protests led to a widespread change in higher education across the Netherlands, officialized by the 1971 bill of Educational Reform, granting more joint decision making to students of Dutch universities.

Institutes and research groups
Studying, understanding, helping, guiding: Tilburg University aims to use its research to contribute to a better understanding of complex social issues. Researchers do so by looking at underlying structures, links and meanings. The research conducted on Tilburg University's campus leads to new insights and questions, but also to practical advice and recommendations.

Research institutes

Tilburg University research is conducted within the faculties' graduate schools or within one of its many research institutes. Each institute specializes in one or more areas of expertise; there are faculty and multidisciplinary institutes. In the latter type, specialists from various disciplines work together. Always with a view to innovative science.

Centers of Excellence

A number of multidisciplinary research centers receive additional support from Tilburg University’s Executive Board to develop into an academic Center of Excellence, which will allow them to remain leading in their (international) field of research. An independent committee determines whether these institutes live up to high standards. The International Victimology Institute INTERVICT and Netspar, Network for Studies on Pensions, Aging and Retirement, have acquired the status of Center of Excellence. INTERVICT conducts interdisciplinary research that contributes to a comprehensive, evidence-based body of knowledge on the empowerment and support of victims of crime and abuse of power. Netspar is a network of Dutch and international pension researchers and Dutch universities on the one hand, and government ministries, supervising agencies and other civil service institutions, pension funds, pension providers, insurance companies, banks, and asset liability management companies on the other. Together they contribute to the ongoing improvement of financing opportunities for the ‘old age’ of Dutch and European citizens.

Commissioned Research
Tilburg University’s core tasks are academic education and conducting academic research. Our third major mission is providing a social service, or: the transfer of knowledge for the benefit of society. Various institutes and research centers are responsible for this. They conduct commissioned research or research in conjunction with industry, the government and other social organizations.
Tilburg University conducts a wide range of commissioned research or research in conjunction with third parties. From large-scale and long-term, involving just a few or many parties, to students’ graduation research. Research always focuses on one or more of the following fields: economics and industry, law, social sciences, communications, culture, philosophy, religion and theology.

Culture and sports

Tilburg University offers a wide range of options in the fields of culture and sports. This is entirely in keeping with its conviction that a university is more than just a place where people go to develop their academic knowledge and skills. Its goal is to galvanize the development of talent right across the board, and to encourage people to examine society from a range of different viewpoints.
In line with this approach, the Sports Center offers more than 45 different sports, while the university actively supports traditional student sports like hockey and rowing. The university’s special scheme for top athletes enables athletically gifted students to combine a course of study with top-level sporting activities. The university uses Studium Generale to stage lectures, debates, cultural courses, concerts and drama productions for students, staff and other interested parties. At the Center for Science and Values, everyone is welcome to contribute ideas and discuss the role of values and religion in present-day society. Here, they can also explore the ways in which teaching and research are influenced by people’s philosophical outlooks.Reflecting the great value that it places on its relationship with the city of Tilburg, the university regularly organizes activities in the city center.
