History

Bangladesh Textile University is the only university in Bangladesh that specializes in textilesand meets a growing need for advanced textile engineering and technology education in Bangladesh and around the world.
During the British colonial rule in 1921 a weaving school was established in Narinda, Dhaka to provide textile technician education by offering artisan-level courses. It was named East Bengal Textile Institute, which was upgraded to offer diploma courses in textile technology and renamed East Pakistan Textile Institute in 1950. In 1960, the institute was transferred to its present campus at Tejgaon Industrial Area. In 1978, the institute launched a four-year bachelor degree in Textile Technology by affiliation with the University of Dhaka and was renamed College of Textile Technology. It was declared as a university in 2010 by passing an act called Bangladesh University of Textiles Act and inaugurated on March 15, 2011.

Courses

The university offers a four-year B.Sc in Textile Engineering program with specializations in
§                     Yarn Manufacturing
§                     Fabric Preparatory Process
§                     Wet Processing
§                     Apparel Manufacturing
§                     Textile Management Engineering
§                     Textile Fashion and Design

Students

At present approximately 900 students are enrolled, of which around 10% are female.
Since the introduction of the degree program about 2,500 students have passed the B.Sc. in Textile Technology from this institution.

Admission procedure and entry requirements

Admission is highly competitive and needs a high academic attainment at the S.S.C. and H.S.C. levels. Selection of the student for admission is made through admission test of 200 marks and considering GPA of S.S.C. and H.S.C. Students get chance to take admission according to merit. The entry requirements for admission test are:
§                     Students must be Bangladeshi by birth or legal immigrant.
§                     Passed S.S.C. (Sc) with GPA 4.00 from any Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education or equivalent.
§                     Passed H.S.C. (Sc) or equivalent examination of the current academic year obtaining at least GPA of 4.00 and on an average at least GP 4.50 but individually not below grade point 3.50 in physics, chemistry and mathematics. Students who passed in intermediate in the past academic year can also apply.

Academic year and medium of instruction

The academic session commences from 1 July each year and ends on 30 June. The medium of instruction is English.

Admission of foreign students

Foreign students must apply well in advance through their respective Bangladesh embassies to the Ministry of Education.

Career prospects

The technological knowledge and skills of textile engineers are highly valued by textile manufacturing companies. The industry realizes that its future depend upon the quality of its technology and managers, because the quality of product and productivity play the vital role for exporting garments. Bangladesh University Of Textiles graduates play a great role in quality production and management. As a result, export in garments sector nowadays reached about 76% of the total export of the country. The majority of textile graduates take posts in the textile manufacturing industry as process or plant managers, development engineers or technologists. Recent graduates have found employment in the areas of production management, design, textile testing and quality assurance, new product development, buying house, commercial banks, customs, etc. At present there is a huge demand for textile engineers in Bangladesh.
