Khulna University of Engineering & Technology  formerly known as BIT, Khulna, is one of the best engineering universities in Bangladesh. The University has continued to expand with the construction of new academic buildings, auditorium complex, halls of residence, teachers dormitory, engineering section building etc. At present there are some 202 faculty members, 2,279 postgraduate and undergraduate students including some foreign students. KUET offers B. Sc. Engineering degree in undergraduate program as well as M. Sc. Engineering, M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees.

History

location of KUET
Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), which started functioning from September 2003, is one of the five engineering universities of Bangladesh having an objective of achieving excellence in higher education, research and development in engineering and technology. This university was established as Khulna Engineering College in 1974; the college was later converted to a degree-awarding autonomous institution called Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT), Khulna in July 1986 through a government ordinance (No. XXI, 1986).
With a view to providing more opportunity and autonomy for improvement in the quality of higher education and research in engineering and technology, the Institute was upgraded and renamed as Khulna University of Engineering and Technology in September 2003 under the “Khulna University of Engineering and Technology Act, 2003.” KUET is financed by the government through the University Grants Commission. The university is an autonomous statutory organization of the Government of Bangladesh. There are various statutory bodies like Syndicate, Academic Council, Finance Committee, Planning and Development Committee, Committee for Advance studies and Research, Academic Committees, etc. for policy- and decision-making on aspects of the university under the frame work of the Act.
There are several national and international research projects running in KUET. Among them in the Department of Civil Engineering European Commission (EC) funded four projects are running now successfully.

Campus

The Khulna University of Engineering & Technology campus is in Fulbarigate, 16 km north of the Khulna city and by the side of the Khulna-Jessore highway.
The university campus extends over an area of 101 acres (0.41 km2). Tastefully laid out with beautiful plantation and with buildings of style and stature with clean and wide roads, the campus presents a spectacle of harmony in architecture and natural beauty. The university is a fully residential one providing attractive campus life. It has essential amenities for community living including mosque, medical center, shopping center, bank, post office, auditorium, playing fields etc.

Library

The university operates two libraries: the General Library and the Reference Library. The General Library provides in-house reading and short-time borrowing of books and other reference material. The Reference Library provides the in-place reading.
All students and faculty can enjoy these facilities for more than 10 hours per working day. Audio-visual systems are available for audio and video documents. The General Library System has more than 30,000 books and 5,000 journals and periodicals in its collection. A library automation process will be available within short time. Moreover, the library is enriched every year by collecting recent books and journals.
Besides the general library system each academic department maintains a rent-based library from which students can borrow textbooks at a nominal rate for the whole semester.

Central Computer Center

KUET has its own VSAT facility with a bandwidth of 512 KByte/s for upload and 1024 KByte/s for download. It operates a large computing network equipped with six IBM servers. The system has more than 250 workstations interconnected by 1 GB optical fiber line and six optical switches. All stations are equipped with latest version computers with necessary printing, scanning and CD writing facilities. All students and faculty have easy access to the network.
Each academic department maintains Local Area Network (LAN), which are further connected with the central network backbone. The central computer network provides state-of-the-art computing software for researchers of various disciplines. KUET has own WiFi Network in the EEE and CSE department.

The rules for admission into the reserved seats shall be framed by the Academic Council on the recommendation of the Admission Committee.

Student life

At present

Halls of residence

Halls of residence at KUET are important features in campus life. There are six residential halls (1 female, 5 male). The administrative heads of a hall are its provost and assistant provost. Usually the halls have a single provost and one or more assistant provost(s). These halls are named signifying important national persons and events.
§                     Fazlul Haque Hall (first dormitory)
§                     Khan Jahan Ali Hall
§                     Dr. M. A. Rashid Hall
§                     Lalan Shah Hall
§                     Rokeya Hall (female dormitory)
§                     Amar Ekushey Hall
Another hall named Bangabandhu Hall is under construction which will add residential facility for few hundred more students. The Hall is now under construction.

Campus life

KUET has a large 101-acre (0.41 km2) campus with nice green landscape blended with beautiful architectural constructions. Students are really at home in the university. Except for the water which is horribly rich in salt, there is no other problem.
It is about 16 km from Khulna, the third largest metropolitan city in Bangladesh. Nice countryside and the rivers Rupsha and Bhairab surround the city. Newly constructed Khan Jahan Ali Bridge connect the city with Mongla port and southwest region of Bangladesh. The Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, is about 40 km from the city. The city has also houses some of the major industries of Bangladesh.
The most attractive places are the Chinese restaurants in city. They are very cheap and delicious. The students mainly have party there in the weekend.

Achievements

KUET is one of the engineering universities in Bangladesh that is trying to blend the theoretical knowledge with practical experience. The students in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes have success in developing industry-level prototypes and have publications in world-recognized conferences, workshops and journals.
In national project fairs and displays organized by national bodies and organizations, KUET has successful contributions and secured top-most places. Such regular activities are BASIS SoftExpo, IT festivals from North South University (NSU), ICT festivals from Islamic University of Technology (IUT).
KUET has participated in many inter-regional programming contests and ICPC. It organized the prestigious 11th IEEE International Conference on Computer and Information Technology (ICCIT 2008) on December 25–27, 2008. The conference is said to be the best organized ICT conference so far in Bangladesh up to date.
From 3 to 5 December 2010, IEEE student branch KUET organized Student Professional Awareness Conference (S-PAC) with Microsoft corporation for the first time in Bangladesh. Besides, KUET organizes many national level seminars and conferences.
