Nagoya City University is one of the public universities in Japan. The main campus (Kawasumi) is located in Mizuho-ku, Nagoya City. Other three campuses (Yamanohata, Tanabe-dori and Kita Chikusa) are also located in the city.

History

Nagoya City University (NCU) was established in 1950 by merging two municipal universities: Nagoya City Women's Medical College  and Nagoya Pharmaceutical University . So NCU originally had two faculties: Medical School and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
NCU has added divisions and graduate schools as follows:
  • 1955: College of General Education
  • 1961: Doctoral course for the Division of Medicine
  • 1964: Faculty of Economics
  • 1966: Doctoral course for the Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • 1970: Doctoral course for the Division of Economics
  • 1988: College of Nursing
  • 1996: School of Humanities and Social Sciences / School of Design and Architecture
(by reorganizing and merging College of General Education, Nagoya Municipal Women's College [founded in 1947] and Nagoya City College of Child Education [founded in 1946])

  • 1999: School of Nursing (by reorganizing College of Nursing)

Below are the histories of two preceding colleges of NCU:
Nagoya City Women's Medical College
NCWMC was founded in 1943, during World War II, to meet the growning need of doctors (the college's original name in Japanese was Nagoya shiritsu joshi kōtō igaku senmon gakkō , which was renamed Nagoya shiritsu joshi igaku senmon gakkō  in 1944.). In 1947, after the war, the college became a university (daigaku) under Japan's older education systems. In 1950 NCWMC was merged into NCU and became Medical School (a coeducational school). The old campus of NCWMC is NCU Tanabe-dori Campus today.
Nagoya Pharmaceutical University :
The origin of NPU was founded in 1884 as Nagoya School of Pharmacy. This was a private school run by Nagoya Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Nakakita Co., Ltd. today). In 1890 the school was renamed Aichi School of Pharmacy . The school was abolished in 1921, because it could not afford to meet the new requirement of Japanese pharmacist test (The requirement was that the examinees should be the graduates of 3-year pharmaceutical schools; Aichi School of Pharmacy had only a 2.5-year course.).
The alumni revived the school in 1931 as Aichi Higher School of Pharmacy , which had a 3-year course. In 1935 the school developed into Nagoya Pharmaceutical College Nagoya yakugaku senmon gakkō. During World War II, shortage of fuel gas struck the college, and in 1946 the college was municipalized by Nagoya City and became coeducational. In 1949 the college was reorganized into Nagoya Pharmaceutical University, under the new educational systems. In 1950 NPU was merged into NCU and became Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The old campus of NPU is Takinomizu Park today (located in Midori-ku, Nagoya).

Hints to adapt to different cultures

Living in Japan, away from the environment that you are most familiar with, is often more challenging and stressful than you expected. Most people will experience some stress as part of this process. Here are some tips about cultural adaptation that will help you to cope with the stress due to cultural differences, and make the most of life and study in Japan.
  1. Culture shock
Although "culture shock" is generally understood as a temporary shock felt when confronted by different cultural customs, ways of thinking and behavior patterns, it actually refers to a psychological state of depression caused by a succession of failure experiences in unfamiliar social situations. Culture shock is temporary and everybody goes through it to some extent in the process of cultural adaptation. General symptoms of culture shock include negative feelings, such as losing self confidence, feeling depressed, attributing all failure to yourself, feeling that nobody understands you, feeling inadequate, etc. Accordingly, you may lose all motivation to talk with Japanese people or to attend classes. Most of these psychological reactions are, again, very natural in the process of cultural adaptation. Please take time to cope with each single event in your life, and you will be able to overcome these emotions sooner or later.
  2. Differences in "academic culture"
It is widely accepted that different values, behavioral and communication patterns exist from culture to culture. However, we often fail to realize that there are also differences in "academic culture", such as the expected roles of academic advisers and students, classroom communication, evaluation criteria, etc. Such differences can also become a major cause of stress. For example, the relationship between academic adviser and advisee is considered particularly important at graduate level education in Japan. Some knowledge of the Japanese academic culture will help you achieve your goal more smoothly.
  3. Coping with Stress
If you feel pressured by stress or lose confidence in your ability to study, you should think about releasing yourself from these negative emotions. Achieving good results in your studies may take a certain amount of time, and ought to be viewed as an accumulative process. Sometimes, you will need to take a break. If you feel tired, do not push yourself too hard and try to enjoy some of your favorite foods, recreation, and physical exercise. It is also recommended that you talk with your friends, academic advisor, or international student advisors / counselors. Moreover, please do not consider the process of cultural adaptation solely as a cause of stress; you can learn tremendously about various cultures, including your own, from this process.
  4. Sexual Harassment
The term "sexual harassment" refers to intentional/unintentional, verbal/nonverbal action or behavior causing distress to, or disadvantaging someone, by offending his or her sexual nature. Sexual harassment is not to be tolerated under any circumstances, and Nagoya University has set up a Harassment Consultation Center to prevent and eliminate its occurrence. Professional counselors deal with inquiries with utmost respect for their clients' feelings and wishes. Where the necessity arises, claims will be referred to the Committee for the Prevention of Sexual Harassment for investigation and arbitration. The Harassment Consultation Center works on issues of any degree of gravity. If you observe someone suffering from any kind of sexual harassment, you may also come and report the case. In addition to the Harassment Consultation Center, each School at Nagoya University has appointed a faculty member as contact person (cf. see below). For English language consultation, you may visit the representative at the Education Center for International Students (ECIS). All consultation will be kept strictly confidential.
