Overview

The University of Tokushima was first established in 1949 as a result of a merger of six existing schools, forming what are now the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Medicine. The university has about 6,000 undergraduate and about 1,700 graduate students from Japan and other countries including South Korea, China, and the United States.

Organization and academics

The University of Tokushima is organized into seven graduate schools: School of Human and Natural Environment Sciences, School of Medical Sciences, School of Oral Sciences, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Nutrition and Bioscience, School of Health Sciences and School of Advanced Technology and Science. As for undergraduate faculties, there are Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Faculty of Engineering. One of the unique features of the university is the large number of affiliated institutes and research centers representing a wide range of interests and disciplines.

Campuses

The University of Tokushima operates on three different campuses: Shinkura (with the administrative head office), Jōsanjima, and Kuramoto.

Notable alumni

Among the alumni of the university are Shuji Nakamura, known as the inventor of first high brightness GaN LED and Shigenori Maruyama, a Purple Honour Medal recipient for his work related to plume tectonics.

University Mission Statement

The University of Tokushima aims to enhance mankind's culture and welfare by training human resources and promoting academic studies, by striving for the pursuit of truth and the advancement of knowledge in a spirit of independence, and to pass along to others our outstanding scientific, technological and cultural traditions. Our University is open to the whole world, and we are doing our best to create a rich and peaceful society for the future.

University Library

The University Library consists of the main on Josanjima Campus and the branch library on Kuramoto Campus. It does the service in order to support education and research.

1) Every year, we purchase six thousand books at both libraries. There are a lot of books to study Japanese and the Japanese culture, too.
2) Students may borrow up to five books in the reading room at one time. The loan period is two weeks for students.
3) We have online catalog freely available on our web site.
4) There are many personal computers by which you can access the Internet and write papers.
5) The latest articles can be searched by using the databases such as Web of Science, MathSciNet, and Eric. Moreover, about 7,500 kinds of electronic journals can be used.
6) When the book or the journal you are looking for is not in the library, you can obtain photocopies or borrow books from other libraries.
7) Students and staff can stay in touch with our latest news by subscribing to our free e-mail newsletter in Japanese. Sign up on the web page.
8) Please feel free to call on us at any time.

Research

The 21st Century Center of Excellence (COE) Program

“The 21st Century Center of Excellence (COE) Program” is a support program launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in fiscal year 2002. The aims of this program are to advance the level of research and education at Japanese universities and making them more internationally competitive and to form world-class centers in Japan.
Two remarkable projects from the University of Tokushima were adopted for the 21st Century Center of Excellence (COE) Program in FY 2003.
The outline of each project is as follows:
1. Disease Proteomics for Multi-factorial Disorders
2. Human Nutritional Science on Stress Control

  • 1. Fields of Study: Medical Sciences
Program Title: Disease Proteomics for Multi-factorial Disorders
Program Leader: Professor Toshio MATSUMOTO Program Summary: With changes in the life style as well as a shift toward an aged society, multifactorial disorders have become the largest causes of deaths and medical costs in Japan. Therefore, to overcome multifactorial disorders has become one of the most important sociomedical issues of the 21st century. Our program targets a variety of multifactorial disorders including osteoporosis, diabetes, autoimmune disorders and metastatic cancers, and aims to conquer these disorders via proteomic approaches by clarifying the pathogenesis, finding diagnostic biomarkers and identifying new drug targe ts. In order to accomplish these goals, basic scientists expertised in proteomics and functional genomics research along with clinical scientists committed to these multifactorial disorders are organized in the program to apply proteomics technologies to the elucidation of multifactorial disorders. Because multifactorial disorders develop by a combination of multiple genetic and environmental risk factors, analyses of both quantitative and qualitative changes in the cellular proteome will be performed to profile disease-related proteome changes. Through these efforts to develop disease proteomics, the program is trying to form a platform for basic and clinical scientists in sharing common research goals, and to bring up young scientists who can lead medical sciences of the 21st century.

  • 2. Fields of Study: Interdisciplinary, Combined Fields, New Disciplines
Program Title: Human Nutritional Science on Stress Control
    Program Leader: Professor Eiji TAKEDA
Program Summary: In today's society, human activities and lifestyles generate numerous forms of environmental stress. This outstanding level of stress is certainly reflected by the number of Japanese people (more than 30,000) who commit suicide, and mental and physical disorders caused by stress are serious social and economic problems in Japan. Food environment, such as eating styles or nutrients, greatly affects mental health especially in children and teenager. The concept of functional food, particularly brain food, still has left much room for scientific arguments by professionals. Brain food is aimed at modifying genetic and psychological aspects of human life, and preventing as well as treating a growing number of stress-related mental disorders. The establishment of functional foods that correctly regulate stress response must be firmly based upon scientific knowledge and legal regulation. Therefore, efficient biomarkers related to pathological stress responses must be found. Furthermore, it is essential to analyze possible diet or nutrient interactions as well as it is indispensable to conduct valid studies on humans. The University of Tokushima Graduate School of Nutrition has an ability to open this new field of research on human nutrition. We have developed a novel method that makes it possible to simply, objectively evaluate human stress response using a microarray technique. Particularly, we have succeeded in detecting a gene expression profile characteristic of major depression in peripheral blood leukocytes. At the same time, we have been developing “nanobiodevices” to promptly measure these maker gene products. Based on our state of-the-art technologies and outstanding achievements in human nutrition, this COE program will definitely meet the demands of society by establishing a new “biomental” technique to objectively measure pathological stress responses, introducing brain foods that correctly regulate stress responses, and developing an integrated system to open a new field of research.
