The University of Florence  is a higher study institute in Florence, Italy. One of the largest and oldest universities in the country, it comprises 12 schools and has about 60,000 students enrolled.

History

The University of Florence evolved from the Studium Generale, which was established by the Florentine Republic in 1321. The Studium was recognized by Pope Clement VI in 1349, and authorised to grant regular degrees. The Pope also established that the first Italian faculty of Theology would be in Florence. The Studium became an imperial university in 1364, but was moved to Pisa in 1473 when Lorenzo the Magnificent gained control of Florence. Charles VIII moved it back from 1497-1515, but it was moved to Pisa again when the Medici family returned to power.
In 1859 it became the Istituto di Studi Pratici e di Perfezionamento, a year later it was recognized as a full fledged university by the government of the unified Italy. In 1923 the Istituto was officially denominated a University by the Italian Parliament.

Organization

These are the 12 faculties in which the university is divided:
  • Faculty of Agriculture
  • Faculty of Architecture
  • Faculty of Arts
  • Faculty of Economics
  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Engineering
  • Faculty of Law
  • Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences
  • Faculty of Medicine and Surgery
  • Faculty of Pharmacology
  • Faculty of Political Science
  • Faculty of Psychology
Faculties are located in traditionally strategic areas based on their subject matter. The Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Political Sciences are in the Polo delle Scienze Sociali (campus of social sciences), in the Novoli district. The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, the Faculty of Pharmacology, and certain scientific and engineering departments are in the Careggi district. The Faculty of Engineering is located at the S. Marta Institute, whereas the Faculty of Agriculture is in front of the Parco delle Cascine. The Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences is located in Sesto Fiorentino. The Faculty of Architecture is in the Accademia di Belle Arti, home of Michelangelo's David. The Faculties of Psychology, Literature and Philosophy, and Pedagogy are in the centre of Florence, but the first two will be moved in the near future to the aforementioned Polo delle Scienze Sociali.

University of Florence :
The University of Florence is one of the largest and most productive public research systems in Italy. This result is related to the number of permanent and temporary researchers working in a wide range of disciplinary and scientific fields, and the numerous junior scientists in training. It is also due to an intensive participation in research programmes of national and international relevance, the significant scientific results achieved, and the financial flow from outside supporting activities of research and knowledge transfer. This combination of factors qualifies the Florentine institution as a modern research university, and accounts for its excellent ranking in national and international classifications.

The researchers of the University of Florence belong to 70 different departments and have at their disposal approximately 60 research structures comprising interdepartmental and inter-university centres as well as 10 centres for research, knowledge transfer and higher education. In recent years the University of Florence has increasingly consolidated its activities in the sphere of knowledge transfer: from the filing of patents (approximately 50 in 2007) to the setting up of joint workshops with enterprise (15), through to participation in 5 spin-off companies. Transfer activities are co-ordinated by a special office (ILO – Industrial Liason Office), that facilitates collaboration with other universities in Italy and abroad. The participation of the University in the innovation processes of the national and regional production systems is promoted by a special body, the Fondazione per la Ricerca e l’Innovazione, set up by the University in liaison with the local authorities.

LENS (European Laboratory for Non-linear Spectroscopy) is an interdisciplinary research center established by the Italian Ministry of Education in 1991 within the University of Florence thanks to the initiative of Prof. Salvatore Califano.

Mission

LENS mission is focused on three main goals: facilitating the scientific collaboration between European researchers in the field of linear and non-linear spectroscopy; providing the most advanced equipment available, assistance and advice to qualified researchers; conceive, plan and carry out research projects in collaboration with other universities and institutions both nationally and internationally.

Structure

LENS has a strongly international and interdiscipolinar structure. The Directive Council is composed of experts in the fields of research covered by LENS and oversees all scientific, administrative and financial activities: the University of Florence, the Italian National Institute for Optics under the CNR, the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, the Kaiserslautern University of Technology and the Pierre and Marie Curie University are all represented on the board.
Current LENS director, appointed by the Rector of the University of Florence on the proposal of the Directive Council, is Diederik Symbolt Wiersma.
The director shall be assisted by a European Committee composed of the Rectors and Presidents of universities and affiliated research organizations or their representatives.

Head office

After many years on the historic hill of Arcetri, since 1995 LENS is located within the Science and Technology Pole at Sesto Fiorentino.

Scientific research

LENS foundation is started by a group of researchers involved in atomic and molecular laser spectroscopy, ma during two decades its research activity has grown and diversified to also cover cold atoms physics (Bose–Einstein condensate e Fermi gas), physics of complex and disordered systems, photochemistry, biochemistry and biophysics, quantum biology, materials science, la photonics, condensed matter physics, the analysis, preservation and restoration of artistic heritage. all of these fields share the same fundamental methodology: the use of laser light to investigate matter.
LENS research groups are involved in four main research lines: atomic physics, physical chemistry, photonics and biophysics.

European Laserlab consortium

As laser facility, LENS is part of Laserlab-Europe consortium since its foundation, providing access to its labs within the Transnational Access To Research Infrastructures Programme  of the European Commission. Main research interests are represented by five Joint Research Activities , two of which involve LENS: ALADIN  and OPTBIO .

LENS main building at Polo Scientifico e Tecnologico of the University of Florence in Sesto Fiorentino

Training

LENS provides a PhD school, also supported by the University of Florence and others European universities, and a Postdoctoral fellowship programme. Both initiatives are partially supported by the EU Marie Curie Actions funded by the European Commission in various scientific disciplines and the European Erasmus Mundus programme.

Awards

In 2006 the Italian CIVR, in its triennial report about national research (referred to 2001-2003 period), has put LENS at the top of Italian small scientific centers for physics and chemistry.
