The TU Braunschweig (English: University of Braunschweig – Institute of Technology) is the oldest University of Technology (comparable to an institute of technology in the American system) in Germany. It was founded in 1745 as Collegium Carolinum and is a member of TU9, an incorporated society of the most renowned and largest German Institutes of Technology. Today it has about 15,500 students, making it the third largest university in Lower Saxony after the University of Göttingen and the University of Hanover. Research projects include Micro Air Vehicles, hybrid engines, and Digital Video Broadcasting.

History

  • 1745: The Collegium Carolinum, a new type of educational institution between secondary school and university, is established. Alongside humanities and fine arts, mathematical and technical subjects are also taught.

  • 1878: The poly-technical school is renamed Herzögliche Technische Hochschule Carolo-Wilhelmina (TH).
  • 1900: The TH is accredited to award doctorates.
  • 1909: General permission granted for women to study.
  • 1933: Political alignment of the TH: the institution loses nearly 20% of its academic staff in the early period of the Nazi regime.
  • 1945: Despite 70% of the institution being destroyed, the TH resumes lectures. It is the first German technical university to do so.
  • 1968: After the establishment of a faculty of humanities and social sciences, the TH is renamed Technische Universität (University of Technology), or TU.
  • 1978: The teacher training college is incorporated into the TU.
  • 1995: Under the slogan »Project Future«, the TU celebrates its 250th anniversary.
  • 2001: Establishment of the computer centre.
  • 2001: Foundation of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) at the Forschungsflughafen.

    Research and Development

Be it climate change, limited resources, infectious diseases or new media, the next decades will pose many challenges to society. Meeting these challenges is the aim of our research.

On the road and rail, in air and space: At the TU Braunschweig, experts from all faculties work hand in hand on the hottest topics in mobility and transport. The Automotive Research Centre of Niedersachsen (NFF), one of Europe’s leading centres for automotive engineering of the future, is currently being set up at Braunschweig Research Airport. Next door, construction of the Campus Forschungsflughafen (Research Airport Campus) is under way. This research facility will focus on the concept of a »people-friendly aircraft«.

The TU Braunschweig is the birthplace of digital TV and also the site where this technology was taken a step further, for example for use in mobile phones and cars. Many other appliances of our everyday lives contain computer systems that interact increasingly with one another. As part of our Information and Communication Technology programme, the tubs.City cluster focuses on developing solutions for tomorrow’s interlinked world. The close ties established between architecture, engineering and environmental science in a single faculty brought about a new philosophy for construction. In rankings, our civil engineering programme regularly features amongst the top 3 in Germany. Braunschweig’s architecture programme was at the origin of several of the world’s most sought-after architectural firms.Discovering more and more intricate details of nature’s building blocks is the aim of our systems biology. It incorporates natural sciences, engineering and computer sciences. A new research centre that is currently being set up on the central campus in close cooperation with the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research is dedicated to this field. With biology and biotechnology, chemistry, food chemistry, pharmaceutics and psychology, the life sciences are very well represented at Braunschweig.
     Europe’s Number 1 Research Region
According to European Union statistics, Braunschweig is »Europe’s most active research region«. For example, no other area boasts a higher percentage of people working in research and development. More than 15,000 people are employed at Braunschweig’s internationally renowned research institutions alone.Students benefit from the unique chance to take part in projects at our partner facilities, for example at the Helmholtz Centres and Fraunhofer Institutes, the Research Airport, and at Federal research facilities and museums. Among other things, they gain experience in biotechnology and environmental technology, transportation and aerospace technology, information and communication technology, measurement technology and microelectronics, but also in humanities and cultural sciences.
The Niedersächsische Technische Hochschule (NTH) is a partnership between the Technische Universität Braunschweig, the Technische Universität Clausthal and the Leibniz Universität Hannover. The goal is to pool the specific strengths of these three universities. United, we aim to distinguish ourselves as one of the largest and best academic facilities for research and education in the domains of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.

    Life on campus

Taking a break – Campus life has a lot to offer when you need to clear your head. Developing near-record-breaking gliders, for example, then hopping in to glide through the skies. Or constructing experimental rockets and launching small satellites into orbit. Those who would rather keep their feet on the ground can get involved in building a racing car or model cars that are able to drive autonomously. If you are looking for a cultural pastime, you are spoilt for choice at the TU Braunschweig: our university orchestra, the TU Choir, the big band and the wind instruments group Akablas all vie for the most talented musicians on campus.
Alternatively, why not join one of our theatre groups? From A for aroha to Y for yoga – With more than 100 different sports, Unisport offers the broadest spectrum in the entire region. Push yourself to achieve your personal best in the sport of your choice and make new friends at the same time.

The TU Braunschweig awards central scholarships for students in all fields in Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. The best first year students in each Bachelor’s and Master’s programme will automatically receive a one-semester
    scholarship.

Getting in touch with the community: Our annual campus festival, TU DAY, regularly attracts some 20,000 visitors who get to enjoy hands-on science. More than 1,500 kids attend our children’s university. And with more than 1,000 public events each year, we are the scientific and cultural focal point of the region. The »Check-in« programme with its 25 events targets pupils with an interest in natural sciences, technology or the humanities who would like to get a taste of university life. Through our »early study« and »compact study« programmes, we give pupils a chance to attend lectures and sit exams while still in school. At the TU Braunschweig, students with children are more than welcome. Having both a family and a career in science is absolutely feasible here. In order to provide ideal support for students and staff with children, we have launched a pro-family programme that has earned us a basic certificate as a »family-friendly university« from auditor berufundfamilie gGMBH.
The Haus der Wissenschaft (House of Science) offers many types of events in an open and creative atmosphere and invites both the layman and the expert to think and speak about their conception of science, technology, and culture.
