The University Duisburg-Essen is a public university in Duisburg and Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and a member of the new founded University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr. It was founded on January 1, 2003 as a merger of the Gerhard Mercator University of Duisburg and the University of Essen, both of which were established in 1972. Until 1994 the name of the Gerhard Mercator University was Comprehensive University of Duisburg.
With its 12 departments and more than 37,000 students, the University Duisburg-Essen ranks among the 10 largest German universities. Many international students study at the University Duisburg-Essen and give the cities of Duisburg and Essen an international atmosphere.

History

Its origins date back to the 1555 decision of Duke Wilhelm V von Jülich-Kleve-Berg to create a university for the unified duchies at the Lower Rhine. To this end, it was necessary to obtain a permission of the emperor and the pope. Although the permission of the pope was granted in 1564 and of the emperor in 1566, the university was founded about ninety years later in 1654, after the acquisition of the duchy of Kleve by Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg. It opened on October 14, 1655 by Johannes Claudberg as their first rector. The university had four faculites: Theology, Medicine, Law and Arts. During its period of activity it was one of the central and leading universities of the western provinces of Prussia.
Only a few decades later the university was in competition with the much better equipped Dutch universities. Since only about one third of the population in the western provinces of Prussia were member of the reformed church, most Lutheran and Catholic citizens in the second half of the 18th century, sent their sons to other universities.
The university declined rapidly and was on 18 October 1818 due to a Cabinet Order of Friedrich Wilhelm III. officially lifted. At the same time, the University of Bonn was founded. Large parts of the Duisburg University Library were relocated to Bonn and then formed the basis of the newly formed Bonn Library. Also the sceptre of the University of Duisburg was given to the University of Bonn, and is available until today.
In 1891 the Rheinisch-Westfälische Hüttenschule was settled from Bochum to Duisburg, which was later developed to the Königlich-Preußischen Maschinenbau- und Hüttenschule, and was renamed in 1938 to Public School of Engineering.
After a decision of the federal state government in 1960 the teacher training college of Kettwig was settled to Duisburg and was named Pedagogical University Ruhr. In 1972 the Pedagogical University Ruhr and the Public School of Engineering, which was renamed in 1971 to University of applied sciences Duisburg. Other schools were also relocated to Duisburg. The University of Duisburg was then called Comprehensive University of Duisburg. In 1994 the university was renamed to "Gerhard-Mercator-University".
In 2003 the Gerhard-Mercator-University and the University of Essen merged to the University Duisburg-Essen.

        Research Profile & Main Areas

        Ideas for the future

In many disciplines the UDE ranks amongst the TOP 10 of German research universities. Over the past three years, research income has risen by 150 percent, a development which is also thanks to the five main research areas: Nanosciences, Biomedical Sciences, Urban Systems, Empirical Research in Education, and Change of Contemporary Societies.
        Nanoscience
Nanoscience is considered to be one of the key issues in technology today. The University of Duisburg-Essen has an outstanding network of experts in this interdisciplinary field, with a reputation that extends far beyond the local region.
        » more about: "Nanoscience"
        Biomedical Sciences
Hippocrates knew that "Illnesses do not come upon us out of the blue". Disease has many causes, and, in spite of advances in modern biomedicine, it is still difficult to combat.
        » more about: "Biomedical Sciences"
        Empirical Research in Education
Why do pupils at German schools compare relatively poorly with their counterparts in the rest of Europe? The groundbreaking research to find the answer to this question is currently being conducted at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
» more about: "Empirical Research in Education"
        Urban Systems
There are few better places for the University of Duisburg-Essen's interdisciplinary main research area of Urban Systems to be situated than in one of the largest conurbations in Europe.
        » more about: "Urban Systems"
        Change of Contemporary Societies

Societies must cope with change on many levels, including social interaction, decision-making, and conflict resolution. Today, these changes are taking place under the conditions of a globalised, networked world.

The Science Support Centre also coordinates the activities of the university’s primary research institutes.
With the Science Support Centre, the University of Duisburg-Essen took a major step in providing its scientists with the best possible support, allowing them to focus their full attention on their research.

We at the University of Duisburg-Essen are happy to welcome you! Our university is known for its international outlook, open approach, and support of global knowledge exchange - we are excited that you will be joining our community and hope to help you feel at home during your stay.
Prior to any period spent abroad it's natural that you will have many professional, financial and organisational questions about your visit. To help you prepare and to give you a reference while staying in Germany we have put together a brochure for you, filled with answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" about things like visas, insurance, and even things to do in the area. Although probably not everything in this brochure brochure like you think of a large telephone book: You may never need all of it but it's nice to have it just in case. is personally relevant we hope you can think of this
What should you do if you have other questions? We would recommend you first check with the institute supervising your stay and colleagues there since they can provide first-hand experience and advice. Mentoring &  Scholarships

The University of Duisburg-Essen is highly committed to offering students the best possible conditions in which to study and work. With a range of different measures, it helps students to pursue and complete their studies successfully, promotes young talent, and takes the differing backgrounds and needs of its students into account.

        Studying

One of the most important tools the UDE uses to support students during their studies is its comprehensive mentoring system. This special programme is designed to lend students precisely the individual support they need in every faculty, particularly during the critical early stages of their courses and at exam time. In concrete terms, this means that every student is assigned a mentor, usually a member of the teaching staff, and has access to various special advisory and support services. The UDE mentoring system raises the level of satisfaction among students and helps them to achieve their own goals and develop their personal and academic skills. At the same time, it is a good way to identify particularly able students and foster their talent.

        Scholarships

Any institution expecting high performance from its students must also be willing to invest in it. The UDE therefore takes part - very successfully - in the North Rhine-Westphalia Scholarship Programme. Since its inception in 2009, this programme has been supporting talented and ambitious students from at home and abroad. The participating universities are required to obtain one half of funding from sponsors, and the state government contributes the remaining half. The UDE selects its scholarship candidates primarily by achievement, but it also takes other aspects into account such as social engagement, parenthood, alternative educational routes or a migrant background. This still young programme is being extended year on year. Some students are also exempted from paying student fees. The UDE waives or reduces the fees according to certain social criteria, an offer which is taken up by no less than one in six students.

        Student fees

The entire student fees flow directly into improving the quality of teaching and study programmes, for example by appointing more academic staff and tutors, buying additional books or investing in media technology. Five percent of total income is allocated to the university's own foundation, the Duisburg-Essen University Foundation, a fledgling institution that is set to play an increasingly important role as its capital grows. In 2007, the UDE was the first university in Germany to establish a university foundation. Its task is to optimise study conditions. Interest earnings are invested in a variety of measures decided upon by the executive board, which is made up of equal numbers of university and student representatives. The Foundation also assists when students are writing their final thesis or if they find themselves in dire financial circumstances; it provides grants to young parents, for example, and awards scholarships to talented students with no financial means.

         Mercator-Professorship Award

The University Duisburg-Essen awards the Mercator-Professur to individuals who are well-known for their social and scientific engagement. So far, recipients of the Mercator-Professur have been:
