The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is a university located in Bolzano, Italy. It was founded on 31 October 1997 and is organized in 4 Faculties and 1 School.
The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (FUB) aims to offer students a multilingual, practice-oriented education that meets the demands of the local and the European labour market. Lectures and seminars are held in German, Italian and English. The only exception here being the Faculty of Education, which offers German, Italian and Ladin speaking students separate training sections. The university offers study programmes ranging from bachelor degree up to doctoral.
The emphasis of teaching is to provide theoretically sound and practice-orientated training. A large proportion of educational activities take place as seminars, lectures given by guest-speakers, practical training and workshops. Within the framework of the academic exchange program students are encouraged to spend one or more semesters at universities abroad.

European Master Programmes
The Faculty of Computer Science at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is very active in this way and is amongst the research centers recognized by the European Union as a leader in this program. Ranking
According to library ranking system issued by German library networks (BIX project) in 2009, this university has the second best library amongst German-speaking states (Germany, Switzerland, Austria and South Tyrol in Italy).
Students activities
The South Tyrolean student association is the most important South Tyrolean association for students. Beside the head office in Bozen there are seven branch offices in Austria and Italy. The sh.asus was founded in 1955 as a non-profit association. The most important function lies in the union representation of interest of the South Tyrolean students studying abroad and the students who are studying in South Tyrol.

One of the main strengths of the University Library is the development of its collections, which are constantly being updated in order to keep up with current and future trends. This work is undertaken by a team of qualified subject librarians whose task is to manage and provide any information required within the specific subject areas of the University.

People who are not affiliated with the Free University Bozen/Bolzano may use the University Library as external users. In order to receive a Library Card one has to present an identity card and pay in Bozen/Bolzano or in Brixen/Bressanone the annual fee of 10,00 euro.
The library offers a constantly growing collection of print and electronic material. The chosen material is based on the needs of the University’s faculties. The entire book collection can be accessed on the open shelves and a comprehensive online catalogue also assists in searching for a title. The catalogue states where the book or document can be found (Bozen/Bolzano, Brixen/Bressanone or Bruneck/Brunico) as well as listing its exact position on the shelf, which is indicated on the book itself with a label on the spine.

The Language Centre courses are available for all students enrolled at the university, for those taking part in international exchange programmes, as well as for those working for the university and for guests. One of the services provided by the Language Centre is an advisory service for all students to help them in the various aspects of language learning. The language centre also tests language levels before students begin their university career and during their studies as well.
The Language Centre is particularly important for those studying in their second and third languages. A thorough knowledge of the three official teaching languages in the university: Italian, German and English is absolutely essential for those who wish to participate completely and succsessfully in the activities offered by the university (lectures, seminars etc.) as well as conferences or other academic events.
The ICT organizes the management of the computer network and of all the electronic sequences. It is also responsible for the development of software, which facilitates the workday at the University.
The ICT departments of the University and the Eurac manage the Scientific Network South Tyrol.

Study Programmes
Undergraduate Programmes
The undergraduate degree is a three-year bachelor degree that corresponds to 180 credit points.
Its aim is to provide students with a solid training in the basic theoretical principles of their subject, to give them a good introduction to general scientific methods and content and to impart specific practical skills necessary for professional life.
Students with secondary school qualifications (A levels or equivalent) can apply for an undergraduate degree. The Italian qualification awarded to graduates is “dottore” (dott.).
Graduates of a three-year degree are sought after in the workplace and it can also be used to access further academic courses such as postgraduate degrees and one-year Masters courses.

Postgraduate Programmes (5 years)
The New Master's degree in Primary Education, a five year program which is scheduled to begin in the 2011/12 academic year, will qualify degree candidates to teach at both the preschool and primary school levels.

Postgraduate degrees (laurea magistrale)
Students who have gained their undergraduate degree, or foreign equivalent, are able to apply for a postgraduate course.
This course lasts two years and corresponds to 120 credit points. It aims to provide students with a more specialised advanced training in order for them to engage in high level work in specific fields.
The Italian qualification obtained after this postgraduate degree is a “dottore magistrale” (dott. mag.).
Students who wish to continue their studies can then access second level master degrees, research doctorates, or in specific cases, specialisation courses.

PhD Research Degrees
The aim of a research doctorate is the acquisition of a suitable methodology when undertaking scientific research or the acquisition of the skills to operate in the highest professional fields.
The research doctorate provides specific teaching methodology such as the use of new technologies,study periods abroad and work experience in laboratories and research institutes.
The courses needed for the awarding of a research doctorate provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to work in universities, public and private institutions and research centres of the highest level.
A research doctorate is awarded once the student has written a doctoral thesis based on original research.
The title conferred to the student is a PhD (Dr).
The minimum official length of a research degree is three years. Admission is given after passing a public competitive examination.

General Education
Professional Training Course and Placement (TFA)
In August 2008 a government reform suspended admission to secondary school teacher training courses in Italy. At the end of January 2011, ministerial decree no. 249/2010 was published, which established the new training programme for secondary school teachers, known as the Corso di Tirocinio Formativo Attivo (TFA) (Professional Training Course and Placement). Vocational Master's Degrees
The university master degree (first or second level) is a specialised advanced course that can be undertaken after the achievement of a degree (first or second level).
The master is awarded after students achieve at least 60 credit points.
Those who wish to take a first level master can do so if they hold an undergraduate degree, a degree following the old Italian system, or other foreign qualifications that are deemed equivalent.
