History :

Jorasanko Thakur Bari
At the university's founding in 1962, it occupied the former home of Rabindranath Tagore. While two of the three faculties of the University, those of Fine Arts and Visual Arts, are still located there, when the Faculty of Arts was founded in 1976, it was located on a new campus at 56A, B. T. Road, Kolkata-50. The new campus was on the grounds of the "Emerald Bower," a mansion built by Harakumar Tagore, the poet's uncle. The mansion and its parklands, later acquired by the Government of West Bengal, became a complex of academic institutions among which this University has the central and larger share. The main administrative office is also situated at the Emerald Bower Campus.
The university was reconstituted in 1981 by the Rabindra Bharati Act, 1981.

Early life :
Mitra's father, the celebrated littérateur, Saurindra Mohan Mukherjee, was a close associate of the Tagore family of Jorasanko. Suchitra Mitra's natural aptitude in music was recognized by Pankaj Mullick, who gave her, her first lesson in Rabindra Sangeet. From her childhood as the youngest member of her family, Suchitra cultivated her love for the songs and poetry of Tagore. She had an unerring ear for music and a natural gift of voice and expression.
Misical Career :
In 1941, Suchitra Mitra received a scholarship to Sangeet Bhavan in Santiniketan, where she had the rare privilege of learning from some of the greatest exponents of Rabindra Sangeet - Indiradevi Chaudhurani, Shantidev Ghosh and Shailajaranjan Mazumdar. Having obtained her Diploma from Santiniketan, Suchitra Mitra returned to Calcutta in 1945. An in 1946, she received her Master's degree in Bengali from Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta. In the same year, her inherent love and commitment to Tagore's music encourage her to found the "Rabitirtha" (which was named by renowned historian and Tagore scholar Professor Kalidas Nag), which today stands out significantly as one of the leading schools of Rabindra Sangeet in Kolkata, and which was named in honor of the Nobel laureate. Founder and Principal, Suchitra Mitra was an active figure and inspiration behind this establishment. Her dedication, sincerity and comprehension of the subtle nuances underlying Tagore's songs is indeed praiseworthy.
She proved herself equally successful as an exponent and an interpreter of Tagore's musical compositions. Her other interests include performing arts including theatrical performances, film-acting, painting etc. Mitra also produced Rabindra Nritya Natyas (or Tagore's dance dramas); she has acted and danced in many of them. She also acted in stage-plays and in films. Her other intellectual pursuits included reciting poetry, writing short stories, poems and children's rhymes, publishing essays and books on more thought provoking subjects such as the grammar and techniques involved in rendering Rabindra Sangeet or on the aesthetics of the music of Tagore. She is the author of many books in Bengali on Rabindra Sangeet, and had recently directed her efforts towards compiling an encyclopedia of Tagore's songs for students and researchers. Suchitra Mitra's repertoire and expertise, coupled with her ability to inculcate in others the love of Rabindra Sangeet was unparalleled and establishes her as one of the greatest names in the world of performing arts in India.
Her versatile personality projected when she sang songs of different moods. Her songs evoke visions of beauty and wonderment, color and fragrance, love and pain, memories and longing, joy and freedom. Suchitra was considered to be one of the most versatile exponents of Rabindra Sangeet and in recognition thereof she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1974.
Recognition :
Her reputation as a successful artiste resulted in her appointment as lecturer in Rabindra Bharati University, where she held the prestigious office of Head of the Department of Music. In recognition of her creative talents, Suchitra Mitra received numerous accolades. Some of Mitra's notable awards included.
  • Tagore Hymn Prize in 1945 from London Tagore Hymn Society.
  • Padma Shri in 1973 from the Government of India
  • Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1986 from the Government of India
  • HMV Golden Disc Award,
  • Shiromoni Puraskar from Asian Paints,
  • Desikottama from Visva-Bharati,
  • Allauddin Puraskar from the Government of West Bengal, among numerous others.
She was conferred honorary D.Litt.degrees by the Rabindra Bharati University, the University of Burdwan and Jadavpur University. As aforementioned, Mitra was also the recipient of the Desikottama (or honorary D.Litt) of the Visva-Bharati University, which is regarded as the pinnacle of recognition in the genre of Rabindra Sangeet.
She retired in 1984 from Rabindra Bharati University as a Professor and the Head of Rabindra Sangeet Department.
Her greatest achievements may have been her ability to immortalize Tagore's songs both at home and abroad to people of all ages. She was invited to the USSR and Hungary, where she spread the message of Tagore. With the Rabitirtha troupe, she performed Tagore's dance dramas in the USA and Canada.
Her presence was an inspiration to younger generations of artists who wish to master the art of Tagore.
In popular culture :

Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta :
Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta is an inevitable name in the divine world of Rabindra Sangeet since the 90's. She is an M.A. (Music) from, Rabindra Bharati University took her lesson in classical music from her father Shri Pabitra Dasgupta and Rabindra Sangeet from Smt. Maya Sen. She is an 'A' grade artist of AIR and TV. She stood first in All India Singing Talent Contest in 1985, Rabindra Sangeet and Bhajan in All India Radio Music Competition (Akashbani) in 1986 Rabindra Sangeet and Atul Prasadee both in West Bengal Rajya Music Competition in 1986. She was invited by the Tagoreans , London to perform in London and Belgium in 1989-90.
Besides Rabindra Sangeet, she has shown her excellence in different fields of music, like, Sanskrit hymn (musicised by herself), south Indian and English, Scottish & Irish original songs of the transcreated songs of Tagore. How accurate and overwhelming those representations are, may be well known to one, who has listened both of her albums named, "Sagarparer Haoyay(1996)" and "Dakhin Haoya(1999)".
She has presently 17 solo albums as Cassettes. Fourteen other cassettes and four CDs released by HMV. Amongst them, 23 single albums are of Rabindra Sangeets. She is also an eminent music-composer. There are 10 albums of her self-composed Modern songs. She is now a permanent artist for HMV. She has a number of awards to her credit, Promothesh barua Award for best female performance in 1995, Anandolok Award as best Female Playback Singer in 1998, 2002, 2003, Dishari (Film Journalist Award) for best female playback in 1998-99, Uttam Kumar Award for best Rabindra Sangeet Cassette ("Esechho Prem") in 1997, Sailajaranjan Award in 1998 and Cha-Cha-Cha Award for outstanding achievement in music for the decade 1990-99. She is the Music Director, Lyricist and singer in the Film Ding-Dong, directed by Shri Chinmoy Roy. She is being honoured with the Millennium Kalakar Award for her outstanding contribution in Indian Music. In 2004, her album of Rabindra Sangeets, "CHENA FAGUN", was awarded as the "Best album of Rabindra Sangeets"(among female artists).
She attended Banga Sanskriti Sammelan in America (USA) in the year 2003 and was again invited by the Tagoreans in the year 2003 in UK, by Canadian Bango Sammelan in the year April 2004 in Canada organised by Bengali Association of Canada. She has also performed Bhajans and Devotional Songs in Different Temples of Gujrati & South Indian Temples in Abroad. She is now one of the most glittering stars in the limitless sky of Rabindrasangeets. She is able to snatch away the heart of audience from the petty worldly matters through her completely devoted rendering (playing herself only a keyboard as the instrument )in the pin-drop silence & tranquility of the hall and it goes on ringing in the mind even after a long time, while in leisure. Here is the mystery behind her fame. Without her, the sphere is incomplete.
For some years, she was involved in teaching as a lecturer of the Music department of Rabindra Bharati University. She has already signed for posthumous eye-donation agreement.
Her dream project "Ramayana" was highly appreciated. It was performed by "ASHOKERENU" (remembering Late Shri Ashoke Sengupta, an eminent recitation artist, her friend and well-wisher), the group of Her numerous students.
The entire Musical drama was successfully represented at Rabindra Sadan twice. First time, on the birthday of ASHOKERENU on 7 July 2005. She herself participated as Devi Durga. The album RAMAYANA contains about 40 Rabindrasangeets (some partly used, some completely),along with the commentary (written by Swagata Herself)by Swagata and Arjun Chakraborty (Actor). She has sung some of the songs herself(some solo, some chorus). All the songs seem to be surprisingly appropriate for the particular situations, specially the last one - "Phurolo Phurolo Ebar Parikshar Ei Pala...", when Devi Sita gets disappeared amidst Mother Earth after her last Agnipariksha.
Every year on 7 July, "ASHOKERENU" comes with a new experiment, of course, beneath the umbrella of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. In 2008, they performed "CHANDALIKA", the well-known dance-drama of the maestro. The most interesting matter about this representation is that all 85 songs are sung by Swagatalakshmi. Besides that, she has performed dance on the stage for the first time as Mother of Prakriti.
Swagatalakshmi has recorded the entire "Geetabitan" of Rabindranath Tagore, containing about 2023 songs, alone in a single album, named "Ekla Geetabitan" in 2006. The only instrument used is a Tanpura and Tabla. 'EKLA GEETABITAN' is available only from "ASHOKERENU".
The recording was started from February 9 and ended successfully on June 23 of the same year in only 105 days. A historical record of singing 118 songs on a day was made during her recording.
Smt. Suchitra Mitra, the veteran artiste of Rabindra sangeet has said about 'Ekla Geetabitan', "It is the most remarkable experiment, a Rabindra Sangeet singer has ever made throughout the ages. It's just amazing."
Besides, she is also renowned for enchanting recitation. She also writes nice poetries during leisure. Four books of her poetries namely, "Akasher Gaan", "Duyoranir Chithi" etc. have been already published. Her story "Kakhon Basanto..." was published in Rabibashariyo of Anandabazar Patrika.
Her devotion, sincerity and perseverance to maintain the accuracy of Rabindra Sangeet, Her versatility and fluency in all spheres of art has awarded her with enormous fame.

The city of Kolkata has always figured prominently in his work. His themes come from his personal interactions with its urban milieu - its sickness and sordidness, its violence and vulnerability and all that compounds its existential agony. In the 1960s and 1970s his work was influenced by the turbulence and political violence of Kolkata.
Shuvaprasanna has depicted varying moods of the city and its people, its places, and all its facets that make the city distinctive. As he states, "There isn’t another city like Kolkata anywhere in the world. In the heart of it, I find innumerable themes, subjects." He does not merely portray reality as 'matter of fact' and his presentation of reality often has dream-like elements in it. In terms of technique, Shuvaprasanna boasts a precise, finely executed style that yields an unmistakable visual intensity. He works comfortably in an assortment of media, including oil on canvas, charcoal, and mixed media.
Explaining his thought-process and philosophy as a painter, he notes: "What every creator wishes to achieve is a universal appeal. There should be no language problem while judging the merits of a painting. One should go beyond themes, beyond words. There can be no clear cut definition for feelings, nor should you wish to seek any logical explanation."
Shuvaprasanna's series of paintings, Icons and Illusions, marked a creative breakthrough for the artist in a number of ways. Whereas he had been known in the past as an urban artist with subject matter that reflected the byways, alleyways, birds, and people of his native Kolkata, in this series he relished more in divinities and flowers. The iconic figures of Krishna, Radha, and Ganesha that found lyrical expression in the Icons series are modern representations and sophisticated idealizations of the same images in the popular media.
His work has been exhibited extensively in India and internationally in the United States, Bangladesh, Singapore, France, Switzerland, and Germany. He has won a number of awards.
Political career :
Since 2007, after his painting career was down, Shuvaprasanna is more involved in politics of West Bengal state than painting and has been closely associated with Trinamul Congress leader Mamata Banerjee and he campaign for parivartan. As a recognition to his support, then Railway minister Mamata Banerjee created a new department in the railway ministry and made him chairperson of that department. He was given a salary of Rs, 50000 cash with lot of other perks and benefits. According to the railway officials, more than 3 crores per annum were being spent on perks and benefits of such people. Later, he was found to misuse his position, never seen doing any duty of the department for which he drew such a huge salary. He has been termed as 'key advisor' to Ms Banerjee by media. Of late he has been trying to launch a channel of his own to promote his ideas and politics. However this has run into bad weather as he has been caught using the name of Ms Banerjee and raising funds in the name of her. Mamata trying to protect her name has started distancing herself from this bearded painter.
