Niigata University is a national university in Niigata, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. It was established in 1949 and has its major origins in Niigata Medical College (established in 1922) and in Niigata Higher School (established in 1919). It is one of the largest Japanese national universities on the Sea of Japan.
The university comprises nine faculties and seven graduate schools (as of April 2010). The student enrollment is about 12,000.
The faculties, graduate schools (except Medicine and Dentistry) are concentrated in Ikarashi Campus (ca. 0.6 km2) to the west of the city. The medical faculties (Medicine and Dentistry) are located in Asahimachi Campus in the downtown. Attached schools (an elementary school, a junior high school and a school for children with special needs) are located in Nishi Ohata district next to Asahimachi Campus (also in Nagaoka City). In a building next to Niigata Station there is a small campus named Tokimate (former "CLLIC"), whose main purpose is to offer courses of lifelong learning for adults.
History
The oldest origin of the university was Kyoritsu Hospital (a temporary hospital) founded in 1870. It was reestablished in 1873 as Private Niigata Hospital, which became a prefectural hospital in 1876.
In 1901 five national medical schools were established in Chiba, Sendai, Okayama, Kanazawa and Nagasaki. The municipal and prefectural governments of Niigata demanded a national medical school from the Ministry of Education, but the plan was deferred because of the Russo-Japanese War. Later in 1910 Niigata Medical School was founded, and the former Niigata Hospital became its clinical facility. In 1922 the medical school was chartered as Niigata Medical College (. Niigata ika daigaku )
The municipal and prefectural governments of Niigata and the local industrial firms further wanted the medical college to be developed into an imperial university (so-called Hokuriku Imperial University) and competed with Kanazawa. But the trials did not succeed until the end of World War II.
In 1949 seven colleges (Niigata Medical College, Niigata Higher School, Niigata First Normal School, Niigata Second Normal School, Niigata Youth Normal School, Niigata Prefectural Agricultural and Forestry College, and Nagaoka College of Technology) were integrated to constitute Niigata University under Japan's new educational system. The university was inaugurated with the Faculties of Humanities, Education, Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Agriculture.
In 1965 the Faculty of Dentistry was established. The faculties (except Medicine and Dentistry) began moving to new Ikarashi Campus in 1968, and the removals finished in the 1980s. In 1977 the Faculty of Humanities was reorganized into the Faculty of Law and Literature, then divided into three faculties (Humanities, Law, and Economics) in 1980. The university became a national university corporation in 2004.

Admission
Before Applying
Planning & Preparation for Admission
1. Clarify Objectives for Studying Abroad
- 1) Why study abroad?
- 2) What to study?
- 3) When to come to Japan?
- 4) How long to spend studying abroad?
- 5) What to do after studying abroad?
2. Degree Acquisition or Limited Study?
Preparation for study abroad will differ greatly depending on whether you will be a Degree Seeking Student seeking a degree (Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate), or an Auditing Student seeking credit(s).- Degree-seeking Student admission
- Non Degree-seeking Student admission
3. Study Abroad: Planning

2) Required Japanese Ability for Study at Niigata University
The lessons and examinations at each of the departments at Niigata University are conducted in Japanese. Accordingly, it is necessary for those seeking to study abroad at an undergraduate level to have Japanese ability sufficiently enabling them to handle the lessons and examinations. The level of Japanese ability required of graduate international students varies depending on the course and the supervisor's teaching style, however, almost all Master's level lessons are conducted in Japanese. Japanese ability will be required for research activities and other school life.3) Planning for Finances
(Costs for study abroad: tuition, entry fees, study materials, accommodation, food, insurance, travel costs, visa fees, living expenses, etc)
Non-payment of tuition will result in expulsion. Those relying solely on being granted a payment exemption, or receiving a scholarship, or taking a part-time job as a last resort to make ends meet will find that this will adversely affect not only their studies, but also their everyday life.
There is no guarantee that all international students will be able to receive payment exemptions or scholarships with respect to their tuition. Furthermore, the "International Student" status of residence does not permit working. Those wishing to engage in a part-time job will need "permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted."

- Cost of Living in Niigata (Life in Niigata)
4. Finding a Supervisor
Those wishing to enter the university as a graduate student or research student will need to find a supervisor. Communication with such a supervisor who agrees to accept you will be required both before and after your time in Japan.- Niigata University: Supervisor Search (Researcher List)
- Japan Science and Technology Agency: ReaD
5. Preparation for Application Procedures
Check you have all the necessary application documents, proof of graduation, transcripts, essays, letters of recommendation and examination results for necessary ability tests, and are aware of their submission guidelines/methods.Admission for International Students
