Ruhr University Bochum located on the southern hills of central Ruhr area Bochum, was founded in 1962 as the first new public university in Germany since World War II. Instruction began in 1965.
The Ruhr-University Bochum is one of the largest universities in Germany and part of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the most important German research funding organization.
The RUB has been very successful in the Excellence Initiative by the German Federal and State Governments (2007), a competition among Germany's most prestigious universities. It was one of the few institutions left competing for the title of an "elite university", but did not succeed in the last round of the competition. There are currently nine universities in Germany that hold this title.
The University of Bochum was one of the first universities in Germany to introduce international Bachelor and Master degrees, which replaced the traditional German Diplom and Magister. Except for a few special cases (for example in Law) this process has been completed and all degrees been converted. Today, the university offers a total of 150 different study programs from all fields.
Ruhr University is financed and administered by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Currently, 34,024 students (2010) are enrolled, and the university employs over 5,000 staff (461 of which are professors), making it one of the ten largest universities in Germany (as of 2003). Kurt Biedenkopf, who later became prime minister of the state of Saxony, was director of the university from 1967 to 1969.
Unlike a number of traditional universities, the buildings of Ruhr University are all centralized on one campus, except for the Faculty of Medicine, which also includes some hospitals in Bochum and the Ruhr area. Although the university is notorious for its monotonous 1960s architecture, mainly consisting of 14 almost identical high-rise buildings, its location at the edge of a green belt on top of the Ruhr valley is rather scenic.

Programmes of Study
RUB offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in all disciplines from the humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences and engineering, as well as programmes in medicine and law leading to the Staatsexamen (state exam). Thanks to our compact campus and our cooperation with TU Dortmund University and the University of Duisburg-Essen in the University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr (UAMR), there are virtually no limits to the number of possible combinations.
Additionally, RUB offers master’s degree programmes as further education options. These employ some distance learning and can be pursued part-time while holding down a full-time job.
Bachelor Programmes
The Ruhr-Universität was one of the first German universities to convert its range of courses to the BA and MA system and has had very good experiences with it. After completing your BA, which usually takes six semesters, you can either embark upon your career or continue and do your MA.
Anyone who signs up for a BA course will take either one or two subjects, which can be virtually any combination. By choosing from a range of optional educational modules, students can gain key qualifications, such as presentation techniques and computer and language skills, for later professional work. These modules also provide opportunities for research-related specialisation.
Some courses do not end in a BA or MA but with a state or church degree. This applies to courses offered by the Faculties of Medicine, Law, and both the Theological Faculties (the term "Faculty" is used for RUB’s disciplinary institutional units) .

Master Programmes
At the RUB, the MA phase follows the slogan “Live Research”: here, academic contents are examined in more depth and research projects and collegial specialist discussions are practised. The MA course, which usually takes four semesters, builds on a degree, a BA, in the same subject or a similar one. As in the BA course, one or two subjects can be studied.
It is also possible to obtain the Master of Education at the Ruhr-Universität, which will qualify you to be a teacher. Building up on the choice of BA subject, two subjects are examined in more depth and complemented by modules with didactic contents.

Teaching Degree
It is often difficult to decide for or against a teaching degree directly after finishing school. This is one reason why the decision whether or not to opt for a school career does not have to be decided until after the BA phase at the RUB. During the Master of Education course, subjects are entered into in more depth and on the other didactic contents are communicated. What is particularly important is the practical professional experience that is guaranteed at the RUB by networking with the schools in the region.
Culture and Leisure
Art at Ruhr-Universität Bochum
With its locations on the Campus (under the university library) and in the Schlosspark Weitmar (Situation Kunst for Max Imdahl), the RUB art collections form a prime international venue for contemporary art. Here, works by Joseph Beuys, Richard Serra, Dirk Reinartz, and many other top artists are exhibited. In the campus museum, the modern collection is supplemented by a collection of coins and a collection of antiquities. Other exhibition sites at the RUB for fixed or changing exhibitions include the university library, the foyer of the Arts Centre, the main lecture hall, and the Malakow tower with its unique medical-history collection.
Create and enjoy culture
The most important cultural players at the RUB include the Arts Centre and the Cultural Office boSKop. Both institutions offer courses in theatre, photography, music, visual arts, dance, comedy, cabaret, and much more. And both regularly present the results: in the form of theatrical evenings, concerts, exhibitions, festivals, and shows. boSKop is also responsible for many regular cultural events such as blues or jazz sessions.
Sport and recreation
If you prefer to spend your free time outside, you’ll also find plenty to do. That includes walks through the botanical garden and the Chinese garden in the south of the campus or across the campus itself. Alongside the imposing buildings, you’ll find many attractive large and small works of art that are grouped together under the heading “Kunst am Bau” – art at the building site.
Another way to keep active is of course sport. If you wish, you can walk or jog through the hilly and thus challenging terrain. The numerous university sports available or the dance classes offered by the Student’s Union provide an alternative for all university members.
Library
The Library System of the RUB
The library of the RUB is one of Germany’s major university libraries. The network of the central university library and departmental libraries makes available some 4.2 million monographs and 6,000 journals. In addition, the library offers a wide range of online resources: about 60,000 electronic journals, 3,500 databases, and 15,000 e-books are at readers' disposal.
Open until late at night
Approximately 150 employees and numerous student assistants provide advice and support – and that seven days a week until late into the night at the central university library. Numerous reading and computer work stations and group study rooms in the departmental libraries are available for academic work. With an extensive range of courses on catalogues and databases, the university library helps with literature researches. These introductions are supplemented by training in reference management software.
Media close at hand
Thanks to the departmental libraries, researchers of all disciplines find their literature in the direct vicinity of their workplace. A total of 2.6 million printed media and nearly 4,000 regularly printed journals are available here as a reference collection.
Close cooperations
All libraries cooperate closely with the central library, which is also organised into regional and national networks. The media of the library system can be found through a shared online catalogue (RUBopac). In addition, in the joint catalogue of the University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr (UAMR), users can also find media located at one of the three locations in the Ruhr area. Regional and national partnerships of the central university library and extensive contacts to libraries abroad to serve the exchange of ideas: in joint projects the libraries develop solutions for the information-related challenges of the future.
Libraries grow together
As part of the campus renovation, the organisation of the libraries is to be further improved and they are to grow closer together in terms of space. The users will then find the entire range of the RUB library in four large library areas.
Library of the Future
Aim – a seamless library system
The future design of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum's (RUB) library system is consistently oriented towards the mission statement “universitas”: RUB-members of all departments will be able to find all the information they need here for research, study, and training. Architecturally and organisationally it will also be a “seamless library system”. As a learning space, the library is to encourage communication, but also offer peace for concentrated work.
Strategy – oriented around the needs of the people
Making efficient use of rooms and resources, and maintaining a comprehensive range of options can only be achieved by combining forces. The needs of its users are decisive here. Students and researchers in the humanities use primarily “traditional” print media. Engineers and scientists on the other hand rely increasingly on access to electronic media. Therefore, the university library will be located close to the central forum entrance and the main area of a building row library for the humanities. Engineering and the natural sciences and medicine will each receive their own building row libraries. The staff of the library will act as information managers and guides, helping people find their way through the diversity of literature available.
Implementation – continuous development
The range of media available in the libraries is to be continuously expanded. A system of higher education bibliography has now successfully been launched and is growing. The common vision of the future library system is being developed by the staff of the libraries together with the user groups in workshops. The plans for the building modifications have been completed. The implementation will be carried out within the course of the campus modernisation.
Research
Research Portal
Where in cyberspace is god? How can we produce and store hydrogen in an eco-friendly way? What can we do to stay fit during the course of aging? – On these pages, you get all the information about what scientists at the RUB investigate and how you can get into this research yourself.
Profile - Scientific Exploration on the Research Campus
Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading research universities with a growing international reputation. Its institutional strategy “Research Campus RUB” (RCR), which made it to the final selection round of the Excellence Initiative in 2007 and has been fully implemented since then, further develops RUB’s unique meritocratic academic culture by merging cutting-edge research with advanced, research-oriented study and teaching.
RCR features novel and highly flexible structures that bring together leading researchers in interdisciplinary Research Departments (RDs), allow talented doctoral researchers to develop to their full potential within the RUB Research School, and promote the independence and advancement of excellent early career researchers from the postdoc level on.
Effective Interaction
RUB draws its academic strength from its can-do attitude and the diversity of academic disciplines on its campus. Research Campus RUB was designed specifically to encourage collaboration and to enable students and researchers to interact more effectively.
Individual Research - Fertile Environment
The large number of recipients of renowned research awards from our own ranks along with guests and award winners from around the world proves the RUB’s success in individual research, as do the external funds raised for the implementation of projects by individual researchers. They are signs of the great scientific activity of our researchers. It is only on this foundation that collaborative research is able to develop. The strength of this individual research is evidenced by over 500 current DFG awards.
When it comes to raising funds, researchers receive maximum support. The RUB aims to reinforce its commitment to individual researchers and small teams and especially encourage cross-border projects with international perspectives.

Closely Networked
For years, the Ruhr-Universität has claimed a place among the universities with the most DFG (German Research Foundation) Collaborative Research Centres (currently ranked 6th). In the last ten years, the RUB has been able to almost double the research funds raised externally.
Over 110 million euros of external funding are raised each year in total, a good part of it for collaborative research. This allows scientists to work together on a subject at the highest international level in the long term and across the disciplines. In future we aim to further increase the number of collaborative research projects.

Early Career Researchers
We have always put special emphasis on encouraging young researchers. During the master phase, students are already involved in research projects.
In future we aim to speed up the transition to doctoral studies for outstanding students interested in scientific careers. The RUB Research School (RUB-RS), which was funded by the Excellence Initiative, offers a structured PhD with additional qualifications for a career in science. In future it is to be open to all doctoral students.
Postdocs do not stand in the shadow of experienced researchers at the RUB, but work independently as equals. The Ruhr-Universität was quick to back W1 professorships; more than sixty are already set up and more are in the pipeline.
Junior research groups enable young researchers to process their ideas in their own team and with the greatest possible autonomy. Innovative projects are intended to spur the research of young researchers, such as the Mercator Research Groups.
In order to hold on to Juniorprofessoren who have proved themselves in an outstanding way, with our tenure-track and career track programs we are able to offer them attractive career prospects.

- Junior Research Groups
- Doctorate
Doctorate
All doctoral students at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) study at the RUB Research School (RUB-RS), the university-wide graduate school that is supported by all researchers at the RUB. A great number of disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields of research offer all of our students, domestic and international, the opportunity to execute their individual research projects. There are more than 50 doctoral subjects at the RUB, which are anchored in the natural sciences and engineering, the humanities and social sciences, and the life sciences.
RUB Research School
The RUB Research School is the central campus hub for all doctoral students. Together with the faculties (i.e. RUB's disciplinary institutional units, akin to academic faculties or departments), we advise everyone who would like to do a doctorate at RUB, and we are there to support early career researchers during their doctorate.
The RUB Research School was established with support from the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments, and has been recognized by the German Council of Science and Humanities for its innovative, interdisciplinary approach to doctoral education.
Promotion of Research
The research promotion at the Ruhr-Universität offers researchers at all stages of their careers support in all phases of their research projects – from the launch of an initial project idea in the Rectorate’s programme to advice on raising external funds, the administrative, financial and legal processing of projects and the transfer of research results.

Research Areas: High-profile, Cutting-edge Research
Large, internationally competitive multi-disciplinary research areas have been established in Interfacial Systems Chemistry, Plasma Science and Technology, Materials Science, Protein Science, Neurosciences, and Religious Studies; these areas are organized as Research Departments.
Materials Science
Whether metals with memory or materials with tailored surfaces:if you can influence the nature of a material, entirely new paths are open to you.

Protein Research
Whether caterpillar or butterfly is a matter of proteins. Proteins are also the key to many diseases - and therefore also to their early diagnosis and therapy.Protein Research : http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/forschung/profil/schwerpunkte/proteinforschung/index_en.html
Interfacial Systems Chemistry
Our research focuses on the understanding of chemical complexity of interfaces. This includes metal-substrate interfaces, solid -fluid interfaces as well as even more complex interfaces such as biomolecule - water interfaces.Interfacial Systems Chemistry : http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/forschung/profil/schwerpunkte/grenzflaechenchemie/index_en.html
Religious Studies
Research on religion at the RUB does not deal with individual issues, but looks at religion in an interdisciplinary context, both in terms of its own dynamics and against the background of social developments.Religious Studies : http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/forschung/profil/schwerpunkte/religionswissenschaft/index_en.html
Plasma Science
Significant innovations in microelectronics, surface treatment and medical technology are based on plasma research. One of the RUB’s key areas focuses on the technical provision of micro-plasmas at atmospheric pressure.Plasma Science : http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/forschung/profil/schwerpunkte/plasmaforschung/index_en.html
Neuroscience
The RUB’s wide range of subjects creates ideal conditions for studying the brain in all its complexity. Joint teaching, research and publications are a natural part of daily interdisciplinary life.Neuroscience : http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/forschung/profil/schwerpunkte/neurowissenschaft/index_en.html
