The Kollegienhaus, the historical central building and lecture hall of the University at the borders of the Schlossgarten

History

The university was founded in 1742 in Bayreuth by Frederick, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, and moved to Erlangen in 1743. Christian Frederick Charles Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach (one of the two namesakes of the institution) provided significant support to the early university. From the beginning, the university was a Protestant institution, but it slowly secularized. During the Nazi era, the university was one of the first that had a majority of Nazi supporters in the student council. In 1961 the business college in Nuremberg was merged with the university in Erlangen, which led to the present state of a university divided between two towns. A technical faculty was inaugurated in 1966 and the pedagogical college in Nuremberg became part of the university in 1972.

Timeline

Below is a short timeline of the university from its inception to its present form:
  • 1700-1704: The Schloss of the Margraves at Erlangen is built.
  • 1743: Friedrich, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, issues an edict whereby the university recently founded in Bayreuth is transferred to Erlangen. It has the four faculties of Protestant Theology, Jurisprudence, Medicine and Philosophy.

  • 1927: Science is taken out of the Faculty of Arts thus creating the new Faculty of Science.
  • 1961: The FAU acquires a further faculty through merger with the Nuremberg College of Economics and Social Sciences (founded in 1919). The University's name is now Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg.
  • 1966: Faculty of Engineering Sciences is established. (FAU is thus the first of the traditional universities of the old federal republic to incorporate engineering as an independent faculty)
  • 1972: The Teacher Training College in Nuremberg is incorporated into the Faculty of Education.
  • 1993: The FAU celebrates its 250th anniversary.

Research

Kollegienhaus

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of the strongest research universities in Germany. At the same time, as recent evaluations show, it is one of the most successful research universities in Germany. FAU, for instance, takes 8th rank in the latest research ranking by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and thus belongs to the league of Universities of Excellence.
FAU has likewise achieved excellent results with regard to single subjects. Accordingly, FAU Chemistry ranks first in DFG’s subject-specific funding ranking, whereas engineering takes second place with regard to third-party funding per professor – which means that it is listed higher than eight of the nine classical Technical Universities in Germany (TU 9). Moreover, eight engineering disciplines at FAU belong to the Top 10 of the respective rankings and thus clearly demonstrate the high level of technical expertise to be found at the university’s sites at Erlangen, Nuremberg and Fürth.
Outstanding positions in the DFG rankings have also been reached by the following subjects: Microbiology, Virology, Immunology (all Rank 1), the Neurosciences (Rank 6), Theology (Rank 5), Philosophy (Rank 9), Literary Studies and Law (both Rank 10). Particularly worthy of note are, in addition to that, Rank 3 for Chemistry and Rank 4 for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology in the subject-specific research rating of the German Council of Science and the Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat). Moreover, top positions were awarded to FAU Chemistry and Physics in the CHE-Excellence-Ranking 2010.
FAU has likewise achieved excellent results in international rankings. In the latest University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) it is listed as sixth best German university. The publication-based Leiden Crown Ranking proves that this placement is not an isolated case: here, FAU ranks 7th in Germany.
Without a doubt: FAU as a whole belongs to the top universities in Germany!

Research Institutions

“Advance through Networks” – this slogan characterises life at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. In a great number of research projects, FAU scientists from a variety of disciplines collaborate closely with members from other Departments and institutions. The University has committed itself to promoting this interdisciplinary approach towards research and supports it, for instance, via the establishment of Interdisciplinary Centres. At present, there are 25 Centres, which cover a vast range of topics including, for instance, Religious Studies, the labour market and labour environment, Gerontology, Neurosciences, Embedded Systems and Molecular Materials. The Centres provide a platform for interdisciplinary research and thereby ensure a continuity with regard to work on projects which can only be successful when conducted across the boundaries of faculties and departments and with the cooperation of several disciplines.
Moreover, the high degree of interdisciplinarity at FAU shows in the University‘s participation in a great number of institutionalised collaborations with other scientific institutions. FAU, for instance, participates in 11 Bavarian Research Cooperation Groups. Similarly, the numerous Collaborative Research Centres, Transregios, Research Units, Research Training Groups and Priority Programmes funded by the DFG heavily rely on the collaboration between different disciplines and institutions.

Main Topics of Research

Major Research Areas

FAU claims leadership in a number of research topics. It has established a continuous, dynamic process of identifying major research areas of university-wide importance, as documented by the number of participants (minimum 30 professors), third-party funding, the scientific impact and the international reputation. The current eight such Major Research Areas cover all possible stages, from established to upcoming. All include excellent researchers who have been instrumental in the dynamic development of these Research Areas.
