Kumaun University is headquartered in Nainital, India. The university was established in 1973 under the UP State Act. It has two campuses, in Nainital and Almora, and 27 affiliated colleges spread over the Kumaun region. A campus is being developed at Bhimtal. It imparts research and teaching in 23 postgraduate and 4 undergraduate departments. The university serves the education needs of the socially and economically weak region.

Distinctions of the University

The university being located in the upland hilly area of new state of Uttarkhand has made all out efforts to serve the educational needs of the socially and economically weak region. It has developed some highly recognized centers of scientific and social researches specifically in the areas of bio-diversity, bio-active principles contained in the Himalayan herbs and other plants, unique ecosystems, minerals, rocks and other geological structures that shape mountain environment and tradition, culture and human adaptation strategies in response to the need and constraints imposed by these massive mountain regions and working environment conducive to think about particles, spectra and structure of matter. Identification of the departments of Physics, Chemistry and Geology for DSA and CONSIST under Special Assistance Programme of the University Grants Commission, FIST programme in four departments (Geology, Botany, Forestry at DSB Campus, Nainital and Geography at SSJ Campus, Almora), Identification of Department of Physics as Centre of Excellence by the State, Department of Geography for Setting up Centre of Excellence for NRDMS in Uttarakhand by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, winning of two Bhatnagar awards and numerous other national and international awards and two FNAs in our university speak of its achievements. 
History :
Residents of the kumaun region had been demanding for a highest seat of learning in their region which could not only cater the needs of the local students but could also provide them with an education platform from where they could gather enough confidence to compete in any challenging environment. The dream desire came into existence in the year 1973 when the University was established with its administrative office in Nainital, two constituent colleges at Almora and Nainital (which later on became Campuses of the University) and affiliated colleges spread over the whole Kumaun region. The strength of the colleges affiliated with the University has been increasing with the passage of time. Presently the University has one more campus at Bhimtal, rendering professional, technical and vocational education and 62 affiliated colleges (31 Government colleges, 04 private colleges and 27 Institutes imparting technical and management skills. The University is running fast on the wheels of success and glory under the dynamic and able leadership of its present visionary Vice-Chancellor, Prof.V.P.S. Arora, who has several distinctions to his credit in the capacity of noted agri-business management personality and an administrator of repute at G.B.Pant University of Agriculture and Technology Pantnagar (Uttarakhand). Under his assiduous supervision, the University is set to play a pivotal role to impart quality education and excellent research to improve the quality of human values irrespective of caste, creed, gender, religion and region in the whole academic world.

Academics

The teaching and research activities are being carried out in both the residential campuses and affiliated colleges of the university.

UGC-Academic Staff College

The UGC-Academic Staff College, Kumaun University, Nainital was sanctioned by the UGC, New Delhi on 10 October 2006 and started its first orientation programme on 12 February 2007. In addition to conducting orientation programmes and refresher courses, the UGC-ASC undertakes a number of innovative extension activities.
UGC-ASC Nainital also conducted short-term courses (2–6 days) for the senior faculty and professional development programme for non-teaching staff.
The UGC-ASC, Kumaun University, Nainital shares the vision of making quality the defining element of higher education in India. It is envisaged that the college will engage not only in its primary task of training of teachers of higher education institutions but will also undertake varied innovative extension activities in the academic arena.
The UGC-ASC Nainital is single Academic Staff College in the state of Uttarakhand and is to play a leading role in the pursuit of excellence in higher education in the region. The overall vision is to make the Academic Staff College a centre for academic activity that will contribute to the development of this Himalayan region.

The University of Kumaun is the premier state university of Uttarakhand and is known for its high standards in teaching and research and attracts eminent scholars to its faculty. It is recognized and funded by UGC and State Government of Uttarakhand , has been accredited by NAAC as a four star University and is a permanent member of Association of Indian Universities. The University had a modest beginning with just two campuses and few affiliated Government colleges. Today not only the University has three sprawling campuses but also 62 affiliated colleges. The administrative office of the University is situated in Sleepy hollow Nainital which is a glittering jewel in the Himalayan necklace, blessed with scenic natural splendor and varied natural resources. The campuses run under the administrative control of the Campus Directors while the affiliated colleges are headed by their Principals or respective Directors.
