Infrastructure

The JNU Campus

The university is an example of the new red brick universities built in the mid-twentieth century.
Located in the southern part of New Delhi and spread over an area of about 1000 acres (4 km²), the campus occupies some of the northernmost reaches of the Aravalli Hills. The campus still maintains large patches of scrub and forestland - the JNU ridge, home to over 200 species of birds and other wildlife such as nilgai, Indian Crested Porcupines, Common Palm Civet, jackals, mongoose, peacocks as well as a large number of snakes.
The JNU library is a nine-storey building in the middle of the academic block of the university and is the tallest structure on the campus. It contains large collections of books, printed journals, newspapers and archives of primary sources. On the ground floor are the reading rooms, a section of the stacks, the library's collection of the back numbers of scholarly journals, computer terminals and a newspaper and journal section. The different floors are devoted to different subjects. The library also houses the P.C.Joshi Archives.

Modernization

The university has been modernizing itself by moving toward "paperless" transparency and e-governance with the help of Wipro, and a wireless network to connect the students and the teachers to the library.

Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU)

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) is primarily responsible for building and preserving a healthy political culture and an atmosphere of open debates on the campus.
Students are kept informed about the various public meetings, discussions and other issues through pamphlets and notices.
Public Action, an objective forum, invited a variety of journalists, politicians, and academics, to debate and discuss various topics.
There is a long tradition in JNU of holding serious post-dinner meetings in the hostels to which the students often invite well known public figures, writers and intellectuals.

Foreign Students' Association

The Foreign Students’ Association (FSA) is an official Jawaharlal Nehru University body. It was instituted in 1985 with a view to promoting friendly relations and cultural exchange. The FSA has a constitution and elected executive, cultural, advisory and financial committees. All foreign students of JNU are also members of the FSA.
FSA conducts Language and Culture classes free of charge for JNU students, including Japanese, German, English, Arabic, Hindi and Urdu classes with the help of FSA members and students. A component of the scheme approved entailed the adoption and announcement of a sexual harassment policy by the University. The said policy has since been evolved and is hereby announced:

“Sexual Harassment Policy of Jawaharlal Nehru University”

Jawaharlal Nehru University is committed to providing a place of work and study free of sexual harassment, intimidation or exploitation. It is expected that all students, faculty, staff, karamcharis and officials will treat one another and visitors to the University with respect. All members of the University community, including those who are in temporary or short term positions are subject to this policy. Anyone violating this policy is subject to disciplinary action.

Reports of sexual harassment are taken seriously and will be dealt with promptly. The specific action taken in any particular case depends upon the nature and gravity of the conduct reported. The University recognizes that confidentiality is important. The University will respect the confidentiality and privacy of individuals reporting or accused of sexual harassment to the extent reasonably possible. Reprisals against an individual who in good faith reports, or provides information in an investigation, about behaviour that may violate this policy, are against the law and will not be tolerated. Intentionally providing false information, however, is grounds for disciplinary action.

JNU is committed to the principles of free inquiry and free expression. Vigorous discussion and debate are fundamental to the pursuit of knowledge, and this policy is not intended to stifle teaching methods or freedom of expression. Sexual Harassment, however, is not the proper exercise of academic freedom, nor can it be protected as freedom of expression. It comprises the integrity of the University and its traditions of intellectual freedom, and it also violates the principle of the equality and dignity of all its members.

What is Sexual Harassment ?

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, and other visual, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when:

It is implicitly or explicitly suggested that submission to or rejection of the conduct will be a factor in academic or employment decisions or evaluations, or permission to participate in a University activity, or when the conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s academic or work performance or creating an intimidating or hostile academic work or living environment.

Determining what constitutes sexual harassment depends upon the specific facts and the context in which the conduct occurs. Sexual harassment may take many forms – subtle and indirect, or blatant and overt. For example,
· It may be conduct towards an individual of the opposite sex or the same sex.
· It may occur between peers or between individuals in a hierarchical relationship.
· It may be aimed at coercing an individual to participate in an unwanted sexual relationship or it may have the effect of causing an individual to change behaviour or work performance.
· It may consist of repeated actions or may even arise from a single incident.

What to do if you feel you are being sexually harassed

Know your rights – Sexual harassment is illegal, both the law of the land and JNU prohibit sexual harassment.

Speak up – If you can, tell the person to stop. State clearly and firmly that you want a particular behaviour to cease.

Get information and support – If you feel you cannot speak up, ask your friends to help you and bring it to the notice of the University. Keep records that might be useful for pursuing the case.

What not to do

Do not blame yourself. Sexual harassment is not something one brings on oneself. It is not a consequence of certain ways of dressing or acting. It is a violation of an individual’s right to work and live with dignity.

Do not ignore it. Ignoring sexual harassment does not make it go away. The harasser may misinterpret a lack of response as approval of the behaviour.

Do not delay. Delay in action increases the probability that unwanted behaviour will continue or escalate.

Do not hesitate to ask for help. Speaking up may prevent others from being harmed as well.

Library :

The library connects us with the insight and knowledge, painfully extracted from Nature, of the greatest minds that ever were, with the best teachers, drawn from the entire planet and from all our history, to instruct us without tiring, and to inspire us to make our own contribution to the collective knowledge of the human species. I think the health of our civilization, the depth of our awareness about the underpinnings of our culture and our concern for the future can all be tested by how well we support our libraries.

University Librarian
Dear Students, and Research Scholars,

It gives me immense pleasure to introduce myself as Dr. Ramesh C. Gaur, your new Librarian.  I feel very happy that I have got this opportunity to serve you.  Prior to joining JNU, I had served at organizations such as Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, Central Road Research Institute (CSIR), and Research and Information System for Non-aligned and other Developing Countries (RIS), New Delhi in different capacities. More details about my profile, research interests, etc. can be had from JNU Library webpage.
We are committed to serve you to the best of our abilities.  We will make concerted efforts to develop this Library as state of art knowledge hub.  We will ensure an attractive, user friendly ambience where minds and ideas from different disciplines and age groups may converge.
Whatever little understanding I have gained after working for two week over here, I feel that there are certain issues/problems which are quite challenging in nature and need immediate attention.  But I am very much confident that with your cooperation we will overcome all challenges and develop our JNU Library as one of the best libraries across the globe.
Your suggestions, regular feedback is very important to us.  We have opened up various channels of communications with you. Complaint Registers have been kept at Information Desk and Cyber Library.  Soon a Suggestion Box will be installed.  Besides, I am always available to you at my email:  rcgaur@mail.jnu.ac.in. and also through “Ask Librarian” at Library web page.  Please feel free to contact for any further clarifications, suggestions/complaints
I wish you all a very happy and prosperous Deepawali.
