Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) is a statutory university established by the Government of Gujarat under the Gujarat National University Act, 2003. This University is based in the city of Gandhinagar, which is the capital of Gujarat and is located 30 kilometers north to the metropolitan city of Ahmedabad. The University started its official functioning in the year 2004 and has five batches of 160 students each, currently under training.

History


This University was formed in the year 2003 on the five year integrated LL.B structure preferred by the Bar Council of India. This University offers its students a course of five years, and upon graduation provides the degrees, Bachelor of Arts (B.A)/LL.B (Hons.), Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com)/ LL.B (Hons.), Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A), LL.B (Hons.), Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)/LL.B (Hons.) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), LL.B (Hons.). GNLU also offer LL.M course which is devised with a view to producing competent teachers and researchers. The syllabus is based on the UGC’s Model Syllabus on Law 2001. The Course is of two year duration with four semesters.It is one of India’s premier institutes of law and is currently located at Sector 26, Gandhinagar.

Mr. Bimal N. Patel is the Director of the University. Mr. Patel is a scholar and academician of international law and diplomacy. He has prepared administrative, procedural and substantive jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and International Labour Organization Administrative Tribunal (Geneva).He has delivered numerous lectures, including one in Cambridge University, UK and has received several honors.

Gujarat National Law University aims to create Centres of Excellence in particular fields of law over the years. They are:

Besides these, a Museum of Indian Legal History is also envisaged by the University.

Publications


The university has been steadfast in its attempt to promote academic excellence through its impetus to academic publications. GNLU has under its publishing hold the following journals:

GNLU Law Review


To further the objective of knowledge sharing and dissemination among the legal fraternity and to appreciate the creative talent, the GNLU Law Review Association launched the flagship law review of the university, GNLU Law Review (TGLR) in 2008. The Law Review is published biannually under the supervision and guidance of its advisory panel composed of eminent legal luminaries such as Justice P.N. Bhagawati, former Chief Justice of India, K.K. Venugopal, senior advocate Supreme Court of India, and Justice Mohit Shah, Chief Justice of Hight Court of Bombay. The GNLU Law Review has a wide circulation including all the Supreme Court Judges’ libraries, the High Courts’ Judges’ libraries, law universities in India and abroad, law firms, senior advocates and law students.

GNLU Journal of Law Development and Politics


The GNLU Journal of Law Development and Politics (GJLDP) is a biannual, interdisciplinary journal which focuses on law, development and politics; it is published by the Editorial Board of Gujarat National Law University and is administered by faculty and students of the university. The purpose of GJLDP is to provide readers with information on recent developments affecting laws, development and political issues. The Advisory Board is composed of eminent legal luminaries Justice J.S. Verma, former chief justice, Supreme Court of India, Justice (Dr.) B.S. Chauhan, Judge, Supreme Court of India, Justice Dilip Gupta, Judge, Allahabad High Court and Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, senior advocate, Supreme Court of India, to name a few.

Academic setup


The University has its curriculum based on the National Law School model and follows a two semester per year pattern. The University also encourages and includes additional project work, report writing, research and analysis in its syllabus.

Extracurricular activities


Moot courts and other legal events are held regularly in the university, as a part of the curriculum as well as an extracurricular activity. The university has a Moot Court Committee to conducting of moot court activities. Students have been regularly participating in national and international moot court activities and have been bringing accolades for the university from India and abroad.

An organizing committee was constituted by the Moot Court Committee for organizing a moot court competition covering the subject of public international law with aspects of international trade law, a first in GNLU's history. GIMC 2009 was organised from April 2 to April 5, 2009 and witnessed student advocate teams arguing before a panel of distinguished judges representing a mock International Court of Justice.

The Literary and Debating Committee conducts regular intracollegiate competitions and has organised events like quizzes, Antakshari, and JAM. The Cultural Committee and Mess Committee are also active in their respective areas.

The Legal Aid Committee organises legal knowledge camps and has conducted programmes to increase legal awareness.

The university runs a monthly online e-journal, Just Cause, which contains articles and reviews, mostly contributed by students.

Infrastructure


Library


The university has a well-equipped library which contains books relating to subjects in law as well as non-law subjects like commerce, history, and sociology. Gujarat National Law University library can be accessed by the students from 9.30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The library has national and international law reports.

IT infrastructure


The university has a computer laboratory with Internet connection for more than 40 computers. The laboratory is on the university campus and is open until 8 p.m.

Gujarat National Law University provides 24/7 Internet access to its students in the hostel with a Wi-Fi connection. The academic block is also equipped with a Wi-Fi connection.

Seminars and conferences


Gujarat National Law University regularly organizes seminars and conferences. Noted dignitaries have delivered guest lectures at the university. Some of them include Justice Y.K. Sabharwal, the former Chief Justice of India, Justice C.K. Thakker, Judge, Supreme Court of India, Soli Sorabjee, noted jurist and former Attorney General of India, and Prof. Upendra Baxi.
