Located in northwestern part of the city, Pune University was formerly known as the University of Poona. The university has its jurisdiction in Pune, Ahmednagar and Nasik districts. Located in 400 acre campus, Pune University has state of the art facilities offering a wide array of academic programs. 
The University of Pune came into existence on February 10th 1949, with Dr.M.R.Jaykar as its first Vice-Chancellor. Presently the Univeristy of Pune is a leading University in India covering three district in Maharashtra - Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik. The main educational programs and offerings of the Univeristy of Pune are extended through a comprehensive course structure, with traditional and modern delivery mechanisms. More than 400 course programs covering different disciplines are offered at the Graduate and Post-Graduate levels. Doctoral research is conducted in a wide range of fields. The number of colleges affiliated to the University of Pune, and its student population has rapidly increased over the years. One of the distinctive features of the University is its large and growing international student community. In fact, the University of Pune is the most preferred destination for international students coming to India.
Currently the University of Pune is one of the largest Universities in the world with more than five lakh students studying in 52 Post-Graduate Departments and Research Centers, 6 Interdisciplinary Centres, 466 Graduate Colleges and 232 Recognized Institutions affiliated to the Univeristy.
The University of Pune (UoP) and its affiliated colleges function within the broad framework of the education policy laid down form time to time by Government of Maharashtra and Government of India. The Maharashtra State Government gives grants and aids to the University of Pune and its affiliated colleges mainly for payment of salaries of teaching and non-teaching staff. The Univesity Grants Commission (UGC) has recognized the University of Pune and most of its affiliated colleges. All development grants are sanctioned by the UGC and other funding agencies such as the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govenment of India.

The concept of specialized research Centers and Schools enable the University to deal with newer and multidisciplinary areas not included in the traditional scheme of Degree Courses. The UoP consists of 13 Faculties, 58 University Departments/Schools/Centres, and 433 affliated Colleges and 232 recognized institutions. A salient feature of the UoP is the large number of foreign students, about 10.000 from 85 countries, i.e. comprising about 40% of all foreign students in India.

History
Formerly known as University of Poona, the University of Pune was established under the Poona University Act, passed by the Bombay Legislature on 10th February, 1948. The then Chief Minister and Education Minister of the government of Bombay, Shri B.G. Kher, ensuref the university received enough allocation of land for its campus.
Educational Streams

Facilities
Hostel facility to both girls and boys is provided at the University of Pune. Students of the University are granted the hostel facility strictly on the basis of merit. The department size is the key factor for deciding the number of seats for each department. Its library has approximate 4.2 lakhs books, periodicals and other study material.

Eligibility : Graduation in any discipline

Admission Criteria : The admission will be made strictly on the basis of overall merit i.e. written test (ATMA) score + GD score + PI score (Combined score).

Pune University MCA Admission 2011 :

MCA programme is designed so that the graduate can adapt to any specific need with ease. The duration of the study is six semesters, which is normally completed in three years.

Admission Criteria : Admission through Entrance Test conducted by the University.

i) 50% Marks or equivalent grade in Master's Degree from a recognized University.

1. Candidates who have qualified GATE/SET/NET /JRE Examinations of apex bodies such as CSIR/UGC/ICRA/ICMR/DBT are exempted from appearing for the written examinations (Paper-I & II).   They are eligible for personal interview at the respective departments.

    Universities in Pune

    Pune is generally termed as the cultural and educational capital of Maharastra. Pune has several reputed colleges and other educational institutions, for this reason it is called the Oxford of the East or Oxford of India.

    Pune's own and one of the oldest education institutes is Pune University formed in 1948 as Dr M.R Jayakar became first Vice Chancellor of the University. It is having area of 400 acre Pune University has many affiliated education institutes and colleges from all parts of Maharashtra State. Research Institutes like National Chemical Laboratories, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) Gokhale Institute of Politics & Economics, MACS, National Institute of Virology (NIV) are just to name few in the campus.

    The University of Pune is one of the top five Universities of India. It has 46 departments, more than 240 affiliated Colleges and 118 recognized Institutions. University of Pune attracts the highest number of foreign students among the other Indian educational Institutions. In the age of globalization the University of Pune has set out to make its presence felt globally through internationalization of programmes and opening of new avenues of association for the global student community.

    The International Centre of University of Pune assists the International Student community in acquiring information about the various courses offered, fees charged etc. It arranges for their admissions and looks after for their welfare. The International Centre of the University of Pune is the first of its kind between the Indian Universities and is a model for all the other Universities to follow. With the approval of UGC and the Central Government, University of Pune proposes to setup campus abroad. A Number of MOU's have been signed with various leading Universities whereby sharing of the facilities in the University.

    Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has its regional centre at Pune which provides various courses as open academic education.

    Bharati Vidyapeeth, the parent body of Bharati Vidyapeeth University, is one of the huge networks of educational institutions in the country. Its moment of glory came when the Government of India in appreciation of the academic excellence of these institutions bestowed the status of Deemed to be University initially on a cluster of 12 institutions of Bharati Vidyapeeth on 26th April, 1996. Later on five more institutions were added to it. Many more institutes to follow in the days to come.

    The Deccan College Post-Graduate Research Institute (Deccan College, for short) is one of the oldest educational institutions of modern learning in India. To begin with, the Institute had four teaching and research Departments: 1. Archaeology, 2. Linguistics, 3. History, and 4. Sociology-Anthropology. With the establishment of the Poona University in 1948, it became one of its recognized institutions.

    Padmashree Dr.D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, with its reputation for providing an excellent education, has attracted an increasing number of aspiring university students from throughout India – in fact, the Indian university received so many applications that the institution, its staff and professors felt stretched beyond capacity. The university offers a broad range of programs including engineering, law, architecture, hotel management, biomedical science, physiotherapy, dental sur­gery and management studies. In addition, the school runs a variety of special programs that include three-year degrees in information technology, computer engineering or electronics engineering, as well as certificate programs in craft cookery or food and beverage service. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, as an Indian Deemed University, conducts entrance examinations for students throughout India.

    Founded in 1930, the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) is one of the oldest institutions for economics teaching and research in India. Though mainly a research Institute, from its inception the M.A. and PhD degrees offered by GIPE were recognized by the University of Bombay. In 1993, Keeping in view its professional standing and scope for further development, the Government of India declared GIPE as ‘Deemed to be a University’.

    The Institute of Armament Technology (IAT) came into being as the Institute of Armament Studies in 1952 within the campus of the College of Military Engineering at Dapodi, Pune. The Institute is the Centre for Advanced Technical Education in all branches of engineering and technology related to Defense. It has the unique distinction of training not only DRDO Scientists but also the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force officers.

    Symbiosis International Educational Centre (Deemed University), known as Symbiosis International University is a part of the Symbiosis Society of educational institutes in Pune, India. It includs, among other institutes, Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies & Research (SICSR), Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) and Symbiosis Law School (SLS). It was declared by the Ministry of Human Resource Development by its notification dated 6th May 2002 as a Deemed University.

    SIEC has student strength of 30,000. These students hail from all states of India and from 32 foreign countries - mainly from Afro-Asian and Middle Eastern countries.

    Founded in 1921, according to the directions of Mahatma Gandhi, as the educational memorial of Lokmanya Tilak, leader of the freedom fight and the great thinker, Tilak Maharashtra University aimed at imparting national education. The selfless work put in by the devoted teachers and students enabled the University to survive against all odds during the pre-independence period. In recognition of the fundamental contribution made by the University in the fields of Sanskrit, Ayurveda, Social Sciences and Distance Education, the University was awarded the status of a Deemed University in the year 1987.

    Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute: This is one of the very famous research institutes in Pune. This is situated at the foot of Law college hill and is immediately recognizable for its striking oriental architecture. There is a museum which exhibits nearly about 20,000 manuscripts from the collection of Bolhar, Kielhorn and Bhandarkar.

    Film And Television Institute of India (FTII): It has different courses in all fields of cinema like acting, dancing, editing, and even music & technical fields.
