North Eastern Hill University is a Central University established on 19 July 1973 by an Act of Indian Parliament. The University is located in the suburb of Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya within the union of India. The objectives of the University, as laid down in the parliament act, are "to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit; to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the hill areas of the North-eastern region, and in particular, the intellectual, academic and cultural advancement". At present the University has two campuses, Shillong and Tura in West Garo Hills. NEHU Tura Campus functions under a Pro-Vice Chancellor.

Library facility

The University Central Library whose membership includes university and college teachers, postgraduate and undergraduate honours students and members of the non- teaching staff has a collection of close to 2,00,000 books, 38,000 bound periodicals and it subscribes to 316 foreign and 366 Indian current journals.

Each of the 'school' of studies comprises academic 'departments' and 'centers' of studies detailed above.

Jurisdictions and Affiliated Colleges

The jurisdiction of the University extended originally to the states of Meghalaya and Nagaland and the erstwhile Union Territories of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. With the establishment of the Nagaland University on 6 September 1994, the jurisdiction of NEHU ceased over Nagaland. Likewise with the establishment of the Mizoram University the jurisdiction of NEHU over Mizoram also ceased from June, 2001. Arunachal Pradesh has its own university.
At present there are fifty-three undergraduate colleges affiliated to the University including eight professional colleges.

The University has eight academic "Schools", each headed by a Dean of the school. Within each of these schools are variable number of academic "Departments". Some schools also have academic "Centres".

The School of Humanities comprises departments of English, Garo, Hindi, Khasi, Linguistics and Philosophy. The Department of English with its main Campus in Shillong has campus departments at Tura. The Department of Garo is located in Tura. All other departments are in Shillong.
With the establishment of the Deparment of Hindi in 1996, students with Khasi, and Manipuri as their mother tongue/first language have enrolled in the post-graduate programme of the Department. Departments within the School draw upon each other for collaborative research work/guidance and teaching.
The School of Humanities teaches innovatives courses on Environment Education, Folk-lore of North-Eastern India, Tribal Culture and Tribal Religion, descritive grammar of the Tibeto-Burman and Austro-Asistic of North-Eastern India, women's writing, Indian Literature in Translation etc.

The School of Human and Environmental Sciences


The School of Human and Environmental Sciences comprises four departments :
  • Anthropology
  • Geography
  • Rural Development & Agricultural Production (RDAP Tura Campus)
  • Department of Environmental Science
The School of Human and Environmental Sciences consists of four departments, namely, Anthropology, Geography, Rural Development & Agriculture Production (at Tura) and Environmental Science. The departments under the school have well-equipped laboratory facilities with well-qualified faculty members actively engaged in teaching and research as evident from the profiles of respective departments. The Department of Geography is supported by UGC SAP and DST FIST. Under these programmes, the department has established a laboratory of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) with software and hardware facilities, and two hydrological observatories. A pollution monitoring laboratory and weather monitoring stations in the Department of Environmental Science are established and have been functioning. Several collaborative and/or consultative research works have been taken up with institutions of repute in the country as well as abroad.

The School of Life Sciences


The School of Life Sciences presently consists of four Departments namely,
  • Biochemistry
  • Botany
  • Biotechnology & Bioinformatics
  • Zoology
This School is an active centre for post-graduate teaching and research in frontier areas of Biology. The major thrust areas of research activities include Immunology, Endocrinology, Reproductive Physiology, Limnology, Genetics, Forestry, Enzymology, Medical Biochemistry, Radiation Biology, Carcinogenesis and Nitrogen Fixation. The Departments under this School have well qualified faculty members, actively involved in teaching and research, many of whom have international reputation and collaborative research programmes with international research groups. They have won wide acclaim in their areas of research and have received several awards. The Departments of Biochemistry, Botany and Zoology are currently being supported by UGC under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) and COSIST. The graduates from this School are successful in obtaining good employment and research positions both nationally and internationally.

The departments of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the School have been extremely active and the faculty members in these three departments have received significant recognition in their respective fields at National and International level. Further, some faculty members are and have been in collaboration with prestigious foreign institutions.The Department of Statistics has been established only recently (in 2005).

The School of Social Sciences


The School consists of five departments, namely the Departments of Political Science, History, Sociology and Law, and Cultural and Creative Studies. All these departments continue to be actively involved in teaching and research. Members of the faculty have been attending regional, national or international conferences in their subjects. Seminars and workshops too have been organised. Two departments, namely, History and Sociology, brought under the Special Assistance Programme of the UGC, are engaged in individual and also collective projects. The Department of Law was started in 2005.
