Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (BAMU) is located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India.
BAMU was established as "Marathwada University" on August 23, 1958. 153 colleges are affiliated to the university. The student population exceeds 100,000.

Historical highlights

A year before the establishment of Marathwada University, the population of Marathwada was about 5.3 million, and there were around 3,686 primary schools, 231 middle schools, 95 high schools, one polytechnic, and one technical school in Marathwada.
There were nine colleges in Marathwada, listed below, all affiliated with Osmania University at Hyderabad in current Andhra Pradesh state.
In response to demand of the public in Marathwada region for a university, the government appointed on 27 April 1957 a committee with the charter to provide recommendations regarding establishment of such a university. The governor of Maharashtra signed the Marathwada University Act on May 5, 1958.
Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister of India, inaugurated Marathwada University on August 23, 1958 at Aurangabad on the premises of the temporary main building of the university.
S.R. Dongerkery became the first vice-chancellor.
Affiliation of the following nine colleges was transferred from Osmania University to the newly formed Marathwada University:
  • The Government College of Arts and Science, Aurangabad (established in 1923).
  • The Milind Mahavidyalaya, Aurangabad (established in 1950).
  • The People’s College, Nanded (established in 1950).
  • The Government College of Education, Aurangabad (established in 1954).
  • The Marathwada College of Agriculture, Parbhani (established in 1956).
  • The Manikchand Pahade Law College, Aurangabad (established in 1956).
  • The Government Medical College, Aurangabad (established in 1956).
  • The Yogeshwari Science College, Mominabad (established in 1956).
  • The Arts and S.B.L. Commerce College, Jalna (established in 1958).
On 14 January 1994, Marathwada University was renamed as “Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University”.

Campus

The university campus covers more than 650 acres (2.6 km2). The hills provide a picturesque background. The Aurangabad caves are embedded in the campus. The Soneri Mahal (Golden Palace), an ancient monument at the foot of the hills, is at the center of the campus, while Bibi Ka Maqbara is at the north side.

Coat of arms

The university's coat of arms bears the following emblems:
  • An Ajanta Arch with the university motto inscribed in its base. The arch is a symbol of the glory of the art of painting and sculpture which reached their acme in the Ajanta Caves.
  • An open book lying on a book-rest, symbolizing learning.
  • A sheaf of jowar, representing agriculture, the chief means of livelihood of the people of Marathwada.
  • Two elephants, representing the strength of purpose of the people of Marathwada.
  • A wheel representing progress.

Osmanabad subcenter

On August 5, 2004, a subcenter of BAMU was established at Osmanabad. It has been temporarily started at Government Ayurvedic College in Osmanabad.
The subcenter has the following postgraduate departments:

Library 
Marathwada region is mainly an agricultural area.  In spite of its rich cultural heritage, its grate spiritual and literary traditions and its valuable historical association, it is backward in comparison with other parts of the state of Marathwada.Basically Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University Library functions differ from those of Universities situated in Urban and metropolitan area like Bombay, Poona, and Delhi.  In big cities there are many educational institutions, which may equal the university towards which the education scholars and the research workers depend upon for the reading material.  There are no special libraries in the Marathwada region, which will be able to cater the services in adequate manner.

 Resources

Technical Section:Classification and cataloguing are the two measure prep rational processes of the library. 
Classification :Library follows DDC because of the easiness and simplicity of the scheme. For cataloguing document ALA Code with certain changes and modification is followed.
 Cataloguing : Most popular cards form of catalogue is used. Each and every card in the catalogue is hand written for each book minimum three entries as Author, Title and Subject Entries and is prepared. Library has preferred a brief simplified cataloguing. Following different parts of the catalogue are maintained. 
            ( A )      Author Catalogue;( B )      Title Catalogue; ( C )     Classified Catalogue ( According to DDC )   ( D )     Periodicals Catalogue.
Types of Library Services :

    • Home lending.
    • In-house use. 
    • Departmental loan. 
    • Inter library loan.  
    • Reservation book facility. 

Reference Service :A separate properly organized and administrated reference section was established in 1972 to provide the following services.

«                   Assistance and instruction ( formal and informal ) in the use of library including the location of material, use of catalogue, use of basic reference tools such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, year books and almanacs, indexes etc.
«                   Assistance in the identification and selection of books, journals and other material relevant to a particular informational needs.
«                   Provision of brief, factual information of the ready reference  i.e. information as names, addresses, statistics, biographical information etc. that can be located quickly in particular reference tools.
«                   Provision of information in responses to longrange reference services.
«                   Reference section provides current awareness services by displaying of jackets and browsing areas.

Reprographic Service:
            From 1994 on an average, more then 5,23,219 copies are supplied to the members of library by the end of September 2005. 
Internet And E-Mail Service :
         Internet and E-mail services are provided from the year 2000.
Reading Hall Facility :
            The facility is available in reference section, periodical section and in reading hall. Near about three hundred readers can avail this facility at a time. 
Bibliographic Services : 
            Bibliographic services provided by the library include monthly list of new additions to contexts pages service of periodicals to the department.
Library Automation :
            SOUL developed by INFLIBNET is used in the library and 3,34,523 titles have been entered by the end of November 2007. Issue and return of books is also done by soul.
Future Plans :
            In future, mechanization of library operations would being about radical change in functioning of the library, in future computerization of library operation would greatly reduce the routine job and relieve a sizable number of library personnel who can be conveniently developed for introducing new library services for improving the existing one.
